Here are a handful of stories of interest from over the past couple days.

- As expected, legislation forcing Haley Barbour to accept the full amount from the stimulus will be killed in the Senate. Sen. Billy Hewes who chairs the Rules Committee has said he won’t bring it up for a vote citing the same reasons to oppose it as Barbour.

- The House and Senate are working on a compromise to the proposed cigarette tax increase. However, the two bodies have some work to do as there is more than a $0.50 difference between the two.

- Frank Melton has challenged the Jackson Democratic Municipal Executive Committee who has tried to disqualify him from running for another term as mayor because he files homestead exemption in Texas, rather than Jackson. A hearing has been set for Wednesday. If the executive committee is successful, it will be a disgrace.

- Speaking of Melton, he placed blame on this situation with Rep. Bennie Thompson. Melton said: “The congressman has four people in this race and he’s not gonna run the city of Jackson the people are, not one congressman.”

- Haley Barbour recently signed legislation that will give tax incentives for casinos to build non-gambling related projects. This includes hotels, golf courses, etc.
