Roll Call did a short piece on the First District, mentioning two candidates who are interested and one who is not.
First, Greg Davis has no intention of running again in 2010. I would say that is wise.
One of the candidates mentioned is Merle Flowers, a state Senator from DeSoto County. While Flowers is very capable, and a much better fit for the district than Rep. Travis Childers, the incumbent would once again be able to effectively split the district much like he did with Davis.
A much better candidate, in my opinion, would be Alan Nunnelee, a state Senator who represents Tupelo. Nunnelee said he is interested, but won’t make a decision until after the state budget process is complete. I think the GOP would stand a much better chance with a Tupelo area candidate bringing the traditionally Republican territory back into their column.
My favorite quote from this piece came from Nunnelee who had this to say about Childers: “Anytime she (Pelosi) needs his vote it will be there.”
We will have much more on Nunnelee and other prospective candidates with time.
