Update On Voter ID Referendum

April 23, 2009

The Hattiesburg American has the latest on the voter ID ballot initiative that is being headed by state Sen. Joey Fillingane.

For the issue to go on the ballot, Fillingane needs 90,000 signatures. He said he has until February 11, 2010 to collect the signatures, but hopes to do so by October to have the issue on the 2010 ballot.

Fillingane said Haley Barbour hopes to have this on the ballot by 2010, so voter ID will be in place for the 2011 elections.

Fillingane did mention that they need the signatures to be distributed evenly among the Congressional districts; but did not specify whether that is the current four districts or previous five as written in the state constitution.
