Confederate Memorial Day

April 27, 2009

Today, the states of Mississippi, Alabama and Georgia will observe Confederate Memorial Day and close state government offices.  This holiday has been observed for decades, but leave it to the NAACP to stir controversy on an issue involving race.  This from MS NAACP leader Derrick Johnson:

“It’s clearly contrary to biblical and Christian principles of loving thy neighbor,” Mississippi NAACP president Derrick Johnson said Friday. “That the state would continue to allow this holiday to be celebrated is an affront to close to 40 percent of the population that is African-American.”

Followed by this:

“It is a remnant of Mississippi’s segregated past,” Johnson said. “Could you imagine Israel celebrating Hitler day or Nazi day?”

The Civil War is what it is from either side you look at it, but for Johnson to put Confederate soldiers in the same category as Hitler and the Nazis is completely off base.  No matter why they decided to fight, the soldiers should be remembered for paying the ultimate sacrifice.  I also am not sure how Johnson gets off saying that remembering those who died in this war is contrary to biblical teachings.  Is it wrong for someone to remember a family member who died fighting in this war?  Should we just try and erase it from all the history books and pretend it never happened?

Mr. Johnson, there is no such thing as selective history other than maybe in your own mind I suppose.  It is part of the past in Mississippi and will not go away.  Our history shows us how far we have come and helps us to learn from what either did or did not work in the past.  Just put yourself on the other side of the argument Mr. Johnson and try to understand how you would feel if some white person said we should erase the Civil Rights movement from all the history books and drop MLK Day as a holiday because all of that was just a bad time here in Mississippi and nobody should have to remember it.  It is people like you Mr. Johnson who are still stuck in the past and do not understand that times have changed and the future only holds more hope for all people.

Today, let us remember those who died and fought for something they believed in, no matter how wrong their views may have been.  Let us not judge, as Mr. Johnson has (read your Bible), and remember these soldiers on Confederate Memorial Day.

confederate day should not exist. the past things that were done
to african american people has hurt the past, present and future
some of you think just because you personally did not have anything
to do with it, you think that you guys or gals dont owe african american people. but you,do.and you owe more than a apology.
you owe every thing.because of all the hurt and pain that it has
caused.it caused a generational curse with african americans.
and all african americans owe you is brotherly love. because that
is ordained by god. but confederate day is not.

Ephesians. 6.12 god bless you all

    Mr. Johnson,

I’m sorry to be the one that has to tell you this, but your race card has been denied.

I have been thinking about this all evening. I wonder how many people have the same view of our society as Mr. Johnson. Has our history left us with such a legacy that to be born black you are a “victim” and to be born white you are “guilty”?

If one’s only offense is being born descended from people who committed evil acts in the past, they are guilty at birth? How is this just?

Besides the fact that the notion of only blacks being enslaved is one that cannot survive any serious study of the history of slavery around the world. Every race has been enslaved. Europeans, Asians, Africans, were enslaved and enslavers.

So you see, if we must pay for the sins of our ancestors, we must all pay. If we view history without any constraining agendas, and narrow views, we will quickly learn that we are all descendants of the enslaved and the enslavers.

I realize that the race card is seductive, but it only serves as a distraction.
