House District 82: Marcy and Jones Talk About the Speaker

Wilbert Jones and Bill Marcy spoke with WMOX 1010 AM radio on Wednesday and fielded a number of calls. One of those questions was about there support for the Speaker of the House.

Jones, the Democrat, said that he was “open to both McCoy and other candidates” and Marcy, the Republican, said he would “likely look for a more conservative candidate.”

“I will support the best person for the job,” Jones said. “Mr. McCoy has the experience, definitely the leadership, and the following. Let’s be realistic, though. I represent East Mississippi and I will vote the best interest of East Mississippi and District 82… If the leadership is on the right path for East Mississippi, yes I will support the current leadership. If not, then I will seek counsel from people in this district for the best qualified candidate.”

“I will have to look at who Mr. McCoy is,” Marcy said. “I’m sure he’s a fine fellow. But I will have to be looking at more conservative people in the House that will be able to put together a budget, put together legislation that will be more in tune with the way my father and mother raised me, making sure that we spend out money wisely.”

Honestly, I would be extremely shocked if Jones did not support McCoy. This would be akin to Bennie Thompson not supporting Nancy Pelosi. The Black Caucus is Billy McCoy’s largest and most loyal base in the House and Jones would have a very difficult time if he did not support the Speaker.

Marcy has basically said he would not support McCoy.
