Cochran To Oppose Sotomayor

July 22, 2009

From Roll Call:

Sen. Thad Cochran (R-Miss.), who voted to confirm Sotomayor to the 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in 1998, is expected to join Minority Whip Jon Kyl (R-Ariz.) in opposing her nomination to the high court.

Cochran’s decision to come out against Sotomayor makes him the second Republican Senator who voted for her in 1998 to switch gears this year.

Additional info from the New York Times:

As soon as Mr. Kyl finished, Mr. Cochran spoke from the floor as well. The Mississippi Republican noted that he had voted for her confirmation to the Second Circuit Court of Appeals in 1998.

Among his reasons for opposing elevating her to the Supreme Court was that the judge had not alleviated his concerns that she would apply the law in an even-handed manner.
