More Talk of Bill Waller in 2011
I first mentioned the possibility of Chief Justice Bill Waller, Jr. running for governor last week after hearing the rumor being floated by Paul Gallo. I have since seen two other stories on that topic.
Andy Taggart called this speculation the most interesting rumor of the 2009 Neshoba County Fair.
Patsy Brumfield also covered the rumor on her blog, and was the first one to indicate a party banner he might run under. She said he is considering a run, followed by “even as a Democrat.”
I don’t know if that means he will play the field and see which primary he has the best chance of winning. Supreme Court justices do not run with a party affiliation, but party’s have the right to endorse judicial candidates they support.
Waller’s father served as a Democrat governor from 1972-1976 (of course, if you wanted to win back then you had a D next to your name). In 2007, Waller endorsed Republican Haley Barbour’s re-election, but he also supported Democrat Travis Childers the next year in MS-01.
Update: Alan at Y’all Politics is covering the fair on Twitter and said that Waller gave no hints or anything along those lines that a gubernatorial bid may be in his future.
