Will Childers Follow Fellow Blue Dog?
Rep. Parker Griffith (D-AL) recently announced that he would not vote for Nancy Pelosi to be Speaker again in 2010 (should he win re-election). Griffith is a first-term Democrat and has opposed the liberal leadership on many key issues.
After saying he would not vote for Pelosi again, Griffith said, “Someone that divisive and that polarizing cannot bring us together.”
I would like to see Childers follow Griffith’s lead in denouncing Pelosi. Childers talks about his opposition to many of the policies put forth by the leadership he voted for, but I have not seen him denounce her in the fashion that Griffith did.
Gene Taylor voted for Rep. Jack Murtha (D-PA) as recently as 2005 (instead of Pelosi), but has supported her when they regained the majority. Taylor would even go on to host Pelosi and others on the coast a couple years ago. Of course, Taylor will never truly win favor with her or gain a major committee chairmanship- even after 20 years. I suppose Taylor is fine with that.
I am sure Childers has calculated his vote for Pelosi and whether it’s a positive or a negative. It is probably a positive for someone who hopes to gain leadership (via gaining favor with the leadership). Although, I could never see the Democrats offering a key position to a Mississippian (not from the Second District). On the other hand, by announcing his opposition to Pelosi, Childers would be able to fend off future attacks for his support.
Interesting that nothing in the article about what the folks in the second district wanted him to do. Nobody has a clue.
