Will Any Legislators Refuse Special Session Pay?
Much was made about the cost of the special sessions this summer. It is reported to cost the state over $30,000 per day during a special session. At that time, I pointed out four officials who turned down their pay for the session: Lt. Gov. Phil Bryant and Senators Billy Hudson (R-Purvis), Chris McDaniel (R-Ellisville), and Giles Ward (R-Louisville). There may have been more but that was the four that were confirmed. So as we head into this next special session, I will take note of any legislator who turns down their pay this time around.
Regarding the specifics of this special session, it looks to be a worthy cause. It also looks like it has bi-partisan backing with Rep. George Flaggs (D-Vicksburg) saying they will be done in a matter of hours and that he doesn’t seen any problems. The session may also take up other “non-controversial” issues such as “modifications to the work-force enhancement fund to allow additional funding for training at the state’s community colleges”.
