Barbour To Recommend MSU-MUW Merger

The Columbus Disptach (and others) are reporting that Haley Barbour is expected to recommend the merger of Mississippi University for Women with another school- most likely Mississippi State- as part of his 2011 budget outline.
The formal proposal has not been released so this is all speculation at this point, and many people are taking a wait-and-see approach to the issue (including the president’s of State and MUW). Rep. Gary Chism (R-Columbus) said he doesn’t see any merger clearing the House and Senate.
When asked about the topic in October, Higher Education Commissioner Hank Bounds largely avoided the issue.
