Initial Thoughts on Phil Bryant’s Commission Report

December 1, 2009

Phil Bryant and his Commission for a New Mississippi released a very detailed report on what they see as a broken government system, and how to fix it.

A couple points about this:

- The overlying themes to me seem to be accountability and stream-lining government. A very good start and something not too controversial.

- This is separate from Barbour’s budget proposals which includes educational consolidation. I see this as a long-term plan, rather than hitting on the nuts and bolts of how to make up for the budget deficit.

- Senate Appropriations Committee Chair Alan Nunnelee said he is ready to introduce legislation to enact these recommendations. House Speaker Billy McCoy was a little more cautious saying they will take a look at it and consider it. He did seem appreciative of the hard work from Bryant and the committee.

- So far we have seen two major plans proposed by Republican leaders in the state. I have seen nothing of substance from Democrats.
