Barbour: Most Bipartisanship I Have Seen
Haley Barbour spoke with the Sun Herald yesterday as the legislative session was beginning in the face of extremely challenging economic times. But Barbour, who has been governor for six sessions prior to 2010, said lawmakers appear more cooperative and ready to work together than at anytime during his two-terms.
Barbour talked about more “will” to do “hard things” among legislatures.
He also spoke highly of Speaker Billy McCoy. He acknowledged their difference of opinions that have been highlighted over the years but said the Speaker was willing to hear new ideas without passing judgment.
And in an interview with the Clarion-Ledger earlier this week, McCoy also was courteous when speaking about Barbour saying they have worked together to “make a difference in the state.” He said they will continue to work together despite party labels.
Update: And in a sign that some of this bipartisanship may be real- or maybe just another sign of the economy (or both)- House leaders have agreed to give Barbour the power to make additional cuts beyond the five percent allowed by law.
To work around the current law, the House plans to exempt certain agencies that can not receive cuts from the provision that says the governor must cut all agencies by five percent before he go beyond five.
