Rothenberg Moves MS-01 To Tilt Republican

January 26, 2010

Earlier today, Y’all Politics noted that The Rothenberg Political Report, which covers federal elections across the country, changed the rating of a number of Democratic held seats in light of the Massachusetts Senatorial special election.

This included MS-01, which moved from Pure Toss-Up (meaning neither candidate was favored) to Toss-Up/ Tilt Republican, which now gives the edge to the GOP, however so slightly.

A total of 28 Democrats saw their forecast move toward the Republicans. Rothenberg did this because of the national mood sensing there is a stronger GOP wave then previously thought.

Last night, I released my first ratings of the Congressional seats and labeled the race as a Toss-Up. I am not going to change anything just yet. While you cannot look past the current winds at the back of the GOP, I still look at these two factors keeping my rating as a Toss-Up: Travis Childers is a very formidable opponent (obviously), he hasn’t necessarily done anything that has residents up in arms, and the state has a long history of re-electing incumbents for federal office.

I am sorry but I have to disagree about Childress. Obviously you did not attend any of the Tupelo Tea Partys. Childress voted for Nancy Pelousi – strike 1, he voted for the stimulous package – strike 2, he went on vacation to Jerusalem during break and failed to have any face to face meetings with his constituents – strike 3. He has not represented the conservative values of Mississippi District 1 effectively, and calls himself a Blue Dog Democrat. If he is so conservative how come he is not a Republican? Noone has ever been able to get him to answer the question – how many jobs in MS 1 did the stimulous package create? and no one ever will.

What are you thinking?
