Democrats Excited To See Crowded Primary In MS-01
As I noted in the Notebook last night, the DCCC sent out a press release yesterday after McGlowan’s announcement where they hoped to ignite a split by referring to Henry Ross and McGlowan as conservatives who are challenging Alan Nunnelee’s conservative credentials.
Today, the state party took glee in the announcement on their Twitter page.

This is an interesting strategy. The first thing that comes to mind is desperation. It’s almost as if they feel Nunnelee has the best shot against Childers (which is a fair assessment right now), and that Childers is so weak that he needs to face the weakest candidate possible- or at least a candidate who has been deeply bruised in the primary- to win. The end result is that they are prompting up Nunnelee and making Childers look bad.
Second, do any GOP primary voters take their cue from either the DCCC or Mississippi Democrats? I did not realize the DCCC was concerned that Republicans were not conservative enough. It is as if they are trying to employ some form of reverse psychology on voters.
They know this is a conservative district and are simply trying to plant that seed in voters minds that Nunnelee is liberal.
In the end, when the race is about who is more conservative that will be a good thing for Nunnelee or whoever the GOP nominee is in the general when facing off against Childers. I am sure that is a fight Republicans want.

Good luck with trying to figure out what the dems, I mean libs, I mean progressives or whatever they are calling themselves are thinking. I know one thing they always impress me with there “straTgery”.
Send Childers back to Booneville!
Looks like you got under their skin: http://twitter.com/msdemocrats/status/8871403789
Another way to look at the crowded primary would be that so many people are unhappy with the current representative they think he is that beatable. Doesn’t look too good for T.C.
Valid point. When people think they have a chance, they are more likely to run. Makes sense.
I have voted Republican all of my life, and want desperately to retake the first district. However, the Democrats have every reason to be excited. We in north Mississippi are going to be just like our friends on the coast, who can never beat Gene Tayor, but who think every election, that the Republican candidate can be the one to win. The field of candidates is weak, and I don’t think any of them have a chance of beating Childers.
Angela McGlowan is a novelty candidate, the almost unheard of, black female conservative Republican. However, she may well enjoy the attention that this novelty brings her, and not necessarily believe what she says. A white female with similar credentials would not be considered a viable candidate. Her stumbling on gun control will haunt her now and if nominated, in November. She also has the Hillary Clinton factor, moving into the district so she can run for Congress.
Alan Nunnelee is a very boring individual and has no charisma. I attended one of his functions recently and came away very underwhelmed. He has served in the state senate for 15 years, without distinction. While he is chairman of the Senate Appropriations Committee, he is in fact, nothing but a lap dog for Phil Bryant. I don’t see educators or other public employees voting for him considering the cuts that Bryant is forcing him to make. Also, the courthouse crowd and their friends and families will oppose him for defeating their pay raise legislation, back before the recession began.
Henry Ross has been one of the most prolific candidates this state has seen. He rivals Shawn O’Hara. He has had failed runs for Eupora Board of Alderman, State Representative, State Senator, and Circuit Judge. After he finally got elected Mayor of Eupora, one of his first acts as mayor was attempting to remove a POW-MIA flag that had hung in front of the Eupora City Hall since the Vietnam War. Another of his follies was convincing the board of aldermen to enact a zoning ordinance that severly restricted private property rights. The red faced board of aldermen had to rescind the ordinance after a huge public outcry. When Ross ran for re-election, the retired former mayor, came out of retirement, ran and beat Ross, with Ross fininishing third in a four man race.
Ultimately, I will vote for whoever is nominated, but I am whatever the Republican equivalent is, of a yellow dog democrat. I am undecided about who I will vote for in the primary. However, I think a real opportunity will be missed this year, because I don’t see any of these candidates beating Childers. I think State Senators Gary Jackson, Terry Brown, former Tupelo Mayor Glen McCullough, former Supreme Court Justice Kay Cobb, and current Supreme Court Justice David Chandler, would all have much better chances of getting elected. As much as I hope I am wrong, my bet is that come late July, early August, the Republican Congressional Campaign Committee will write this race off, and will be sending money to candidates in other states that they believe will have a better chance of winning.
Wow, looks like the mudslinging has begun!!!!!!!!!
Jason, I hear Ross read your comments and said it was all true. You told me more about him than I could find anywhere. Please keep us updated. I also know Ross reads this sight. Mr. Ross why will you not answer my questions? You have all my digits.
Amber,
I doubt that the candidates read this. They have others who read it for them. From what I know these comments on Ross are a gross exageration of the truth. The feeding frenzy that goes on here by those of us “who have nothing better to do” is exactly why folks do not want to run. I am sorry that there are no perfect people – just people who are truly trying to do what is right and screw up sometimes. You really seem to be for Nunnelee – why not try talking about why he should win rather than why the other candidates should not.
Stop being Bossy, you know that is one of your flaws. Who are you for? On this site you down McGlowan and praise Ross. Is what Jason mention the change in the paradigm of small town government you keep quoting? Just yesterday you hosted McGlowan in your home for her big announcement speech and book signing. Well which is it? Ross looked like a putz standing there with a copy of McGlowans book at her signing. Also you just said yourself that Jason told the truth. How is it a distortion? By the way I am for the candidate that will do the least damage. But I’ll tell you this I am not two faced. Host McGlowan and burn her here. The only negative thing I hear about Nunnelee is he raised taxes. I am not so dumb as to think that that doesn’t occassionally have to happen. Oh and being concerned about my childrens future is not “nothing better to do.” I have every right to talk about why Ross and McGlowan should not win. You also told all these plans Ross has, share! Federalist by the way believes in a big centralized government.
OK Amber you win?????????????????????????????
Jason,
You are pretty prolific yourself. Looks like you have studied the candidates so it will be nice to have someone to blog with who is informed on backgrounds. I want to discuss Ross because I am the most knowledgeable about him. I have also studied McGlowan but it looks like she is getting enough attention right now. We can do Nunnelee later??????????
Ross has indeed run for public office. I did some unofficial interviews with people from Eupora about him and his family so let’s start there. His grandparents owned a farm and a Ford Dealership in Eupora. His parents took over those businesses when the grandparents retired and all worked together until that occurred. Henry is an only child but was brought up in a home where hard work was a must. Both his parents and grandparents instilled in him a strong desire to give back to the communittee. He ran for Alderman at the age of nineteen while he was in college starting his studies for a law degreee, and for his age did pretty well. He was the first republican candidate to run in Webster county when he ran for State Senate. (We have a similar issue here in the small town where I live – everyone is a democrate or at least they say they are.) Of course he lost that election- people think there is only one lever to pull – democrat – ha!!! Anyway because of his run and some others there are now some real republicans in office in Webster county. Ross is a progressive thinker – I spoke to a black alderman about him and this is what he said – “In a small town it is hard to make changes, Henry Ross is the best mayor that Eupora ever had. He was always trying to make this town better. Right around the time that Henry got elected a real recession set in here – over 600 jobs were lost and we have never really recovered. That and the fact that some of the other alderman here were trying to run the town and had some real head butts with Henry is why he lost that election. We did try to get him to come back after the next term – even the current Mayor asked him to do that but he was already on his way to Washington DC”. The flag pole incident occurred because an MIA Flag was flying under the US and State Flag . Henry wanted to have another pole put up to give that flag the place that it was due. When the new pole went up the MIA flag was placed on that pole and still flys there today. He is a veteran and it has special meaning to him. I have a picture of it and will try to put it on here. The zoning that caused such controversary was over one of those ugly metal buildings being set up on Route 9 at the entrance to Eupora. Ross advocated a zoning ordinance that would require curbing, landscapping , parking lot and improved front facade on commercial buildings. At first the board jumped on it but when opposition occurred they went to major finger pointing and so the ordinance was recinded. Incidently the building in question did all the things required in the ordinance and looks pretty good.
With the right twist you can make anything sound bad but most of what I have found out about Ross has been positive. In small towns you tend to live in each others pockets so everyone knows everything about everyone. If this is the worst on Ross – he is still a good candidate. I will be happy to cover more of the details I found out but don’t want to be accused of wring the Henry Ross story.
When can we get to the issues?
Jason that really hurts. But its true. I could not be more under whelemed about the under achievers that we have to challenge Childers. I would support a next door kind of person who has no qualifications other than they love North Mississippi and they want to do what is right for not only us but the country as a whole. Where are these people? They can’t all be working stiffs like me. Heck that might be refreshing for someone to be late for a debate because they could not get off work in time.
Hey Brett, will you run?
With all due respect Jason, Angela McGlowan is not “moving into the district ” and graduated from Ole Miss. She has spoken at nearly every “tea party” event in the district, effectively making the circuit for at least 8 months before announcing. She has national recognition as a pundit on Fox, reached number 8 on the NYT bestseller list, and I would expect is very capable of fund-raising with her appeal to the anti-politician, anti-incumbency movement.
You forgot to mention anti-gun.
Vince I am not calling you out, but I will use your statement as an example. Every statement that I have read that is pro McGlowan speaks only to the fact that she is friends with big name politicians. People that does not qualify her for a d@m^ thing! She is an interloper. I for one think she should run as an outsider because she is an outsider, TO US. Stop being so enamored with the fact that she has national recognition. Read the posting on this site
“Wednesday Election Notebook” the Wall Street Journal is all but endorsing her. Obviously they know something, along with the rest of us, that you supporters are to star struck to see.
As for speaking at the Tea Party rallies. Do you not think that she saw the Partiers as her opportunity to get her foot in the door? She may have just announced her candidacy but she has been running for a long time. Tea Partiers just happen to be the group that she has chosen to USE to get a leg up on the competition.
Be very afraid of the wolf in sheeps clothing.
Charlotte, I challenge you to name one thing that I posted about Ross that is a “gross exaggeration of the truth.” If anyone doubts what I have posted, go to the Webster-Progress Times newspaper office in Eupora and read the back issues that cover the time period that Ross was mayor, or go to the City Hall and read the minutes from the meetings of the mayor and board of aldermen. You will not find any exaggeration at all. There was one controversy after another while he was in office.
Vince, McGlowan may have graduated from Ole Miss, but she has had no ties to the district since she left Ole Miss. She has the novelty of being a conservative black woman, and having appeared on the Fox news channel. This hardly qualifies her to represent the district in Congress. She obviously knows very little about the concerns of the district. Her comments about gun control verify that fact. She is definitely not ready for prime time. I will be shocked if she gets more than 15% of the primary vote. If by chance she were nominated, the NRA would pump huge sums of money into the Childers campaign.
I know that I appear to have a negative tone, and I am sorry for that. I want the Republicans to retake Congress, and our district could be the one that makes the difference. However, all our candidates are deeply flawed, and none of them will fare well in a general election campaign with Childers.
Jason,
Go to my comments above – you may not like them – but that is it. I have also looked at the newspapers etc. and have talked to the people who were there at the time.
Nothing more hated than an informed voter.
Jason thanks for the information, as sad as it may be. I do not know if anyone is the same as me but I can count on my two hands the number of times I have been able to vote “for” a candidate in any election. I always seem to be voting agianst other candidates. This primary is shaping up to follow that same form.
I do not want any of these people being my represenative!
Still I must choose one. I am ashamed that we have people in North Mississippi who think that McGlowan is a liegit Rep. because she has political friends, wrote a book and is a political pundint.
The only issue in Dist. 1 that she truly has any background on is Casinos. After all she was a lobbist for them for quite some time.
This is the Obama syndrome. Fairly young, black, good at giving speeches, and has a nice smile. Vote for her.
Any idiot that comes here and talks about listing our guns has no idea who the people are that she wants to Represent.
Still the lady further up the colum seems to believe that her candidate was just “trying to do what is right” by taking down the POW flag in Eupora.
Still Nunnelee is an old time politician. With skeletons all in his closet.
Good Grief Charlie Brown this is our best and brightest. No wonder the rest of the country thinks we are slow!
Hey Jason, man you are in for it now. Charlotte loves nothing more than to do commercials for Henry Ross.
Let me tell you she also likes to pretend that she is not part of his campaign but she traveled to all four of his speeches last week. He even thanks her at the start of his speech in Corinth. Then she got upset with me because I called her out for pretending to be neutral when she is obviously not. Just look at what she said “McGlowan is getting enough attention and we can do Nunnelee later”. Get real!
I have not figured out if she is a plant of his or if she is related to him. Which ever it is I just want her to admit it and stop pretending. If you are for him and agianst the others admit it.
Look she attacked both you and Amber when both of you are doing exactly what she is doing. Telling people what you know and what your opinions are.
I guess that is not fair when it is bad for her buddy.
Now she wants to debate you on here.
Thats a laugh!
For God sakes she gave Ross’ whole life story in the commercial on this page. But hey if you grew up with someone I guess you should know there life story.
She fancies herself a real expert so get ready.
Mississippi Elitist,
For about the 55th 55th time I like Ross. Never said i did not. He is a good Christian man and wants to do a good job. I have never said otherwise. I do study my candidates, and watch the Video he said Shauna not Charlotte – she is the lady who introduced him and worked with him.
James T,
You seem to know it all – why don’t you run???????
Dearest Charlotte I was just sharing my views because I thought that’s what everone else was doing. I can see by your post above why you took offence to my post. I did not realize there were family members on here. But this doesn’t change the fact that all of the candidates are lackluster. Jason has been kind enough to list some great names that are much more qualified than I would be. Just because I have an opinion does not mean that I am qualified to do the job. God knows we have enough unqualified people running already.
I can tell from the post that you have left on here that you value your opinion very much and I say good for you but just jor future reference its bad etiquette to call people out on a blog just because they have an opinion that differs from yours. That my dear is what chat rooms are for.
Served!
I am serious – why don’t you run. Sorry that you took offense. I was serious
Charlotte I didn’t take offense dear I just set the record straight between us. Don’t backtrack and say you were serious. You don’t ask someone to run for office by saying “you seem to know it all”. You just got a taste of crow thats all. The taste will subside soon. Then we can move forward with our opinion posting. Just rembember don’t call me out no more.
Charlotte I was saying that I did not realize you are Henry Ross’ family member. It took me a minute to figue out what you were saying there.
Sorry, no family member of mine would do such a personal attack. She knows me from another site I am sure. Amber my not even be her name? Most people who blog on here do
not use their real names.
You know me. My dad is your brother.
I DON’T THINK SO
Like a big ole Burger King Burger Have it your way. Remember this.
That is true Charlotte outsiders will come in and use handles from the people who are already here. That is just the nature of the beast and you must figure out the good and the bad.
THANK YOU THIS IS OUT OF CONTROL
OMG!!!!!
Charlotte, apparently the source of your information about Henry Ross, is Henry Ross. You are totally wrong about the POW-MIA flag. He was wanting the flag removed altogether. The VFW was outraged, and Ross quickly retreated. You are also wrong about the zoning ordinance controversy. The ordinance was much more restrictive than even the ordinance that covers the City of Madison. Anyone concerned about personal property rights should be fearful of anyone that had the views that he had, about the intrusion of government on property rights. I don’t know which black alderman you talked to, but the black alderman that was on the board when Ross was mayor, no longer lives in Eupora. But since you mentioned race, and I wasn’t going to, perhaps you should investigate the attepts that the City of Eupora made, while Ross was mayor, to restrict public access to White’s Creek Lake, so that black teenagers could not play at a small park adjacent to the lake. Maybe the newspaper accounts about all these issues are wrong, but they were all reported about at length, in the Webster-Progress Times. Again, I challenge you to go read the newpaper accounts, or board minutes covering the time period that Ross was mayor. You can rest assured that Childer’s opposition research team will be doing so if he is nominated.
My problem with the field of candidates is that I think whoever is nominated, will not stand a chance against Childers. I honestly don’t know who I will vote for in the primary. Unless someone else enters the race, it will be Ross or Nunnelee. McGlowan, pardon the pun, really shot herself in the foot with her gun control comments. Only the most extreme liberal element of the Democrat party has similar views on gun control.
Jason,
We could go on forever with you say and I say about issues. No my info is not directly from Ross but I have spoken with him in detail – I have read back new articles, talked with people who know him and his family members. I have also talked with two Vets there in Eupora who do not see the flag pole situation the same as you say they do. I will be happy to release the name of the black alderman that I spoke with but I thought anonymity was supposed to be part of the game here. You also have the black white situation reversed here – Shauna who is name on the Ross video addressed that issue in her introduction to him.
As James T would say Served!
Jason, you are either Childers’ Op research team or the disgruntled former editor of the Webster Progress. You should spend so much of you day attacking the other candidates integrity and twisting truths too. It would be very entertaining and from your stand point, educational. Also, why attack all the GOP in a public forum if your so hardcore GOP? Why not spend your day scrutinizing every move of the real enemy, Childers. Some tend to forget the objective of this years election cycle.
Thank you Webster County Man. It is very hard to talk positively about any candidate on this site. You are correct – Childers is the one we should be persuing. Can we not discuss the positives on the candidates and not the negatives all the time.
My God are you all related? I am so confused right now.
See Jason when you get the upper hand she will call her campaign cronies in. The other night there was an apperance from on called “brown bag” that has been one of my favs.
Brett you need to start a chat room this is so much fun I can’t stand it.
Yea, I’d say this thread has pretty much been beat to death. Don’t mind the back and forth as it relates to yalls candidates, but lets lay off actually going after the person making the comments.
