Barbour Won’t Endorse Candidate in MS-01

March 3, 2010

At a forum in Oxford last night, Haley Barbour fielded a variety of questions including one about the Republican primary in the First District. Barbour was asked to choose a favorite among Alan Nunnelee, Angela McGlowan and Henry Ross, but declined to do so.

He added, “I worked for Ronald Reagan. Ronald Reagan never endorsed a candidate in a primary- not even his own daughter.”

While Barbour may be staying out of it, his PAC- Haley’s PAC- made a $1,000 donation to Nunnelee last year, one of only four candidates who they have made a donation to this election cycle.

That is interesting because neither Ross or McClown are reporting donations from the Gov..

I think Chris misunderstood the question?

He should give to all three if he is really staying out of it. But McGlowan and Ross did not file until recently, so it wouldn’t be public.

I believe Barbour made the donation last summer or fall when Nunnelee was the only Republican in the field and he was being corted by the NRCC. As for donating to all three, I imagine Barbour won’t be donating to any Republican again until the primary is over.

I found them myself but thanks all. If you are interested, according to the Center for Responsive Politics, his contributions are as follows.
    House
    Harper, Gregg (R-MS) $1,000
    Nunnelee, Alan (R-MS) $1,000
    Tedisco, Jim (R-NY) $5,000
    Senate
    Vitter, David (R-LA) $5,000
I will agree that we probably will not see anymore donations in Dist.1 until after the primary.

By comparison, in 2008 here is what Haley PAC gave out:

      House-
      Davis, Greg (R-MS) $10,000
      Harper, Gregg (R-MS) $1,000
      Radewagen, Amata Coleman (R-AS) $500

      Senate-
      Alexander, Lamar (R-TN) $1,000
      Chambliss, Saxby (R-GA) $1,000
      Cochran, Thad (R-MS) $1,000
      Coleman, Norm (R-MN) $5,000
      Collins, Susan M (R-ME) $5,000
      Cornyn, John (R-TX) $1,000
      Dole, Elizabeth (R-NC) $1,000
      Kennedy, John Neely (R-LA) $4,000
      Lott, Trent (R-MS) ($5,000)
      Schaffer, Bob (R-CO) $1,000
      Smith, Gordon H (R-OR) $1,000
      Sununu, John E (R-NH) $5,000
      Wicker, Roger (R-MS) $5,000

      Pres-
      McCain, John (R) $5,000

I imagine we’ll see more from Haley’s PAC in the coming months. In 2006, he dished out $10k to Yvonne Brown in MS-02 (remember her?), I imagine he can match this in MS-01.

The money to Susan Collins is odd. Talk about a RINO. Are his contributions abnornmal in relation to other conservative governors?

Barbour’s a party guy, not an ideology guy. He often talks about a big tent and expanding the playing field. A donation to Collins or Snowe is not unusual.

I don’t see any real reason for Barbour to get involved. It can rub people the wrong way and there’s really no reason in doing it since McGlowan is proving she’s not up for the test and Ross has yet to make a name for himself. Right now, its Nunnelee with ease.
