Henry Ross: It Appears Travis Childers Will Vote For Healthcare Reform Bill

March 16, 2010

Henry Ross sent out an email blast today titled, “The Senate Version- The Last Step to Government Run Healthcare.” He talked about the problems with the Senate bill, specifically the state managed health insurance exchanges, something that often gets passed over when supporters claim it does not contain a public option (like the House bill).

Here is the email in its entirety

Here is what Ross says about Childers possibly voting for the bill:

Now, here he (Travis Childers) goes again. It appears he will vote for the Senate’s version of healthcare reform. According to his own words, he is poised to vote against the wishes of North Mississippians again, joining arms with Speaker Pelosi and Majority Leader Reid to establish federally mandated healthcare exchanges.

During a February 24, 2010, tele-town hall, Mr. Childers said he is ‘unopposed to the Senate version.’ If his own words are not convincing enough that he will vote ‘yes’ for a government takeover, then take a look at his website. According to his official website, he believes a ‘Health Care Exchange will create sufficient competition within the insurance marketplace without a public option. If it does not, then we need to act accordingly to continue to bring down the cost of health insurance premiums.’

If Childers does indeed vote for any type of healthcare reform bill being pushed by Obama and Democratic leaders, public option or not (or whatever other words are used), he is toast. Plain and simple. I feel Childers has hurt himself already by simply being a quiet ‘No’ vote, but actually voting for the bill would seem to be unforgivable at this point.

Henry Ross states in his e-mail:

“It is clear, any person who supports an exchange, basically supports government run healthcare.”

The REPUBLICAN healthcare plan states “The Patients’ Choice Act would ensure that the federal government partners with states to create State Health Insurance Exchanges” – So according to Ross the Republicans supoprt government run healthcare. FYI Haley Barbour is in favor of a healthcare exchange, guess he is in favor of government run healthcare too.

And, Henry Ross on his website says “Americans should be able to shop around and find a policy in a state that is affordable and fits their needs.” …hmmm sounds like a healthcare exchange to me. Guess Ross is in favor of government run healthcare too.

Apparently no one on Ross’ staff believes in fact checking before releasing statements. But then again he can’t even get the national debt counter to work on his website.

I too got the e-mail. I like Ross so far but I want to hear more details.
Yes, yes, I know that Childers is a liberal and needs to go. What I am wondering is what is Ross going to do if he goes to Washington? Is he for leaving a broken heathcare system the way it is? Is he for limiting or doing away with precoverage requirements by insurance companies? I still dont know what he plans to do. I like that he is keeping the attack focused on Childers but I would like to see a little more about what he plans to do if elected. Even if its like everything that the Republicans covered in their meeting with the Dems and Obama. Even if its a compilation of most of the suggestions the Republican Party presented. That is more than I know about his plans now.
I think most engaged voters agree that Childers needs to be cast out of office. What I want to know is the plan of the person I vote for, if they are elected, once in office.

Childers is probably going to vote for the Senate Version that has an exchange. The Senate version of the exchange allows for the goverment to offer insurance to compete against the private sector. Its not the same sort of exchange that Paul Ryan advocated. If you support the Senate Version that is up for vote this week, you are supporting goverment ran healthcare.

Here is the completely ironic thing about all of this which is playing out in MS-1 and districts all across the country: if you’re Henry Ross or Nunnelee or McGlowan, you want Travis Childers to vote for the bill. If you’re supporting one of the Republicans against Childers then from a political standpoint, you want Childers to vote for the bill. But from an ideological standpoint and a “doing what’s best for your nation” standpoint, those Republicans against Childers would want him and other conservative Dems vote against the bill.

That is a wonderful point, Matt, but I feel Ross supports what is best for the nation as a whole rather than solely what is best for his political career. His website states that, “We need conservative fighters, who are willing to pay a political price, if necessary, who will do whatever it takes, to restore the pillars of American society.”

Admittingly, Childers’s one vote may or may not be a deciding factor in the passage of this bill, but I can gaurantee with near certainty that Ross does NOT want the bill to be passed; if Childers’s pro vote would tip the scales, then I am sure Ross does not want him to vote for it – point blank.

If Childers does not, in fact, vote for the bill, fear not, good sirs, I am positive the Republicans in MS-01 still have plenty of other complaints.

Oh, and “RandomThoughts” – if I disregarded the content from every website with a technical glitch, I am not sure how many websites I COULD trust ;)

Anyone who thinks Travis Childers is “liberal” is either insane or so pig-ignorant that they think anyone to the left of Adolf Hitler is “liberal.”

You are correct it was a misrepresentation to call Childers a liberal. He actually does not even have the backbone to be a liberal he is whatever Pelosi tells him to be. If she says he must vote no then he votes no. If she says he must vote yes then he votes yes. At least liberals have some ideas of there own. Childers is just a follower and its time Dist1 had a leader.

If Travis Childers votes yes for health reform, I will be shocked beyond belief. His emails to supporters (I have been valiantly trying to unsub from his email list, to no avail) has done nothing but distance himself from health care reform; I don’t know where Ross thinks he’s getting his information (as Childer’s political opponent in an active race, his word is not something in which I’d put a lot of trust), but the people who voted for Childers are getting a different message.

I really hope you guys are right – I might have to rethink my pledge not to vote for him again, if he does.

Although, as Alan says, he’s no liberal, he’s not even liberal leaning.

What are you thinking?
