JFP: You’re Using Our Picture of Haley

When Donna Ladd sent me an email last night, she had to imagine it would make its way to the blog (Update: And now Y’all Politics). Ladd told me that she was “pretty confident” that the picture of Haley Barbour I have in the banner at the top of the page was property of Jackson Free Press.
And I do recall JFP using a similar picture when they write there (ever so slanted) stories on Barbour. Seems like they might have an argument… Except for the fact that the picture is listed in the Wikimedia Commons. This photo was taken by George Armstrong with FEMA, and as it clearly states: “all FEMA images are in the public domain.” And here is the source of the picture that I used.
Here is the JFP picture of Barbour they frequently use, and thought I was using.
Ladd asked me where she could send the bill for using the picture and I politely responded that she could send all my bills to the White House.
I’ve never said much about JFP on this blog. I’ve never so much as spoken with a single person there. We exchanged a couple tweets a while back when one story said that the Republicans are the majority in the Senate- and I thought it was appropriate to correct them (although I understood the sentiment of what they were saying). They seem to have pretty good access to Democrats in the House as well as Jamie Franks, and I’ll use a quote or two if I think it’s good. Not sure exactly what there thinking was with the email, but thought y’all might get a good kick out of it.
Update: Since Robert pointed it out, I decided to give everyone a side-by-side of the pictures in question. I call it Exhibit A. On the left, is the JFP stock photo and on the right is the public domain photo I am using (look for Michael Chertoff’s ear in that picture).

You can clearly see Michael Chertoff’s ear in the picture in the header of this site, but the JFP image features no ear but only his shoulder and it would be really hard for you to add his ear from their stock image that you linked to. It is truly all in the small details of things even ears in this case.
You don’t have confidence in my ability to add an ear so neatly in place to a photo?
Well done!
To funny! Seems like you should be 100% confident before you go accusing people of stealing! Watch out though, she may be sending you a bill for the comparsion picture.
Bill? I thought ole Ladd used interns to churn out her fish wrapper? I wonder how much they ‘billed’ her?
You got their name wrong. It’s the Jacksoon “Freak” Press.
Thank all for using the photo. I am deployed to Mississippi now and will post more images of Gov. Barber from yesterday, as well as disaster scenes from the tornado. Look for them on FEMA.gov, Photo Library. And of course they are free!
