Thursday Election Notebook

May 13, 2010

MS-01: The Republican Liberty Caucus has endorsed Henry Ross in the First District race. According to their website the RLC was founded in 1991 to “promote individual liberty, limited government, and free enterprise within the Republican Party.” They have also endorsed Gregg Harper in the Third.

MS-01: Alan Nunnelee spoke with the Daily Journal editorial board and talked about his campaign and the issues he is focusing on. Among other things, he said his experience- which some have knocked him for- is a positive.

MS-01: Henry Ross has also spoken with the Daily Journal editorial board. Using his regular line that career politicians are part of the problem he was asked if that was directed at Nunnelee to which Ross responded that the voters will have to decide if they consider Nunnelee a career politician.

MS-01: The Mississippi Democrats called Ross’ ideas ‘scary’ and said that his ideas don’t amount to ‘jack diddly.’ This is the first time they have mentioned Ross in anything significant.

MS-01: Obviously the Democrats have put a great deal of attention in trying to attack Nunnelee, and now that they have gone after Ross which leaves Angela McGlowan as the sole Republican in the First they have not mentioned. Speaking of McGlowan, she has also yet to meet with the Daily Journal editorial board. I have been told, however, that she will soon be meeting with them (that should be fun).

MS-01: In response to the Republican candidates, the Democrats offered this assessment: “Thank goodness the people of the First Congressional District have a commonsense Congressman in Travis Childers.”

MS-01: The Democrats continued their series in attacking Nunnelee’s legislative record, this time by going after his role in crafting this year’s legislative budget where shrinking revenues forced hits to all agencies, obviously impacting education (the biggest expenditure) the hardest. So the Democrats are saying don’t send this man to Washington because he isn’t reckless with taxpayer money?

MS-03: Probably Mississippi’s most famous perennial candidate right now, Shawn O’Hara made a stop in Meridian and got a little press out of it.

MS-04: Steven Palazzo recently said this on Facebook: “I am the only true conservative candidate who can defeat Gene Taylor in the general election.”

MS-04: Palazzo also has a link to a recent radio interview he did with Ron Meyers on 91.7 and he does go into pretty good detail on his campaign and a host of issues.

2011 Governor: In addition to the Bill Luckett/ Progress for Mississippi fundraiser in DC we mentioned yesterday, it looks like they will be having another fundraiser next Monday. This one will be hosted by Hiram Eastland. You may remember that name from the Don Siegelman, Paul Minor, and Steve Patterson trials.

2011 Governor: Andy Taggart mentioned Delbert Hosemann on the blog today saying he wasn’t sure that he would be running for re-election as SofS, but rather he may run in the crowded GOP gubernatorial primary. That would be some primary if Hosemann does indeed throw his hat in the ring, but as Taggart pointed out that would set up a potential fifth open seat in statewide offices.

2012 President: Amid the dustup from the RGA spending a good amount of cash on the Massachusetts gubernatorial race in support of a liberal Republican, one Iowa RNC member said, “He (Barbour) is toast in Iowa, as far as I’m concerned. I traditionally stay out of presidential contested races, but this kind of information will be distributed far and wide.” Steve Scheffler, who made those comments, has since backed down saying he supports the job Barbour is doing as head of RGA in helping to elect Republican governors.

Tea Party: A group billing itself as The Mississippi Tea Party recently held a convention in Flowood and drafted their first Constitution. They say this makes Mississippi “one of very few states, if not the only state, to successfully form a statewide tea party association.” The convention was attended by 35 delegates from the following Tea Party chapters around the state: 912Project Hattiesburg, Central Mississippi Tea Party, Leflore/Carroll Tea Party, Madison County Tea Party, Meridian Tea Party, Southwest Mississippi Tea Party, Starkville Tea Party, Vicksburg Tea Party and We the People Congress of Pearl River County.

Steve wouldn’t put a link to a debate on his site….further proof he isn’t up to the task yet..Most of what a lawmaker does is debate and articulate their case. An interview doesn’t bring to light the sharp contrast between the two candidates.

Less than three weeks from the campaign and every candidate is listed…Oh, except Joe Tegerdine. Nice, Brett!!

Right…what’s up with that? It is like you purposely ignore our next congressman from the 4th district.

C’mon now…be reasonable…. I’m sure it wasn’t anything intentionally against or FOR any specific candidate. Right?

Hey, now…be nice……it probably just “looks” like Tegerdine is being given the shaft since he is not mentioned…again. I feel sure there was nothing intentionally done here. Right? Plus, keep in mind, most of the voters in MS 04 probably don’t read this stuff like we do. So, I am going to continue to do my part in reaching voters one-on-one, one-by–one, which is what is going to get voters to the polls, and which is why, I believe Tegerdine has the advantage. So, it really doesn’t matter how many blogs do or do not include Tegerdine in their feature stories.

Thanks for posting the story on the “The Mississippi Tea Party” Brett. I’m glad to see them getting the recognition that they deserve after all their hard work on the Voter I.D. petition! I just wanted to mention that there is only one Tea Party endorsed candidate in the Mississippi Congressional Race for the 4th district and his name is Joe Tegerdine! Or Joe Tea Party as his opponent likes to call him.

Brett: If we look at the basic principles of economics we will discover that the attacks by the “spendocrats” on Nunnelee are baseless. It is the net effect of long term liberal policies that have resulted in a housing/financial/employment melt down. The expected result of such policies would of course, be the erosion of any states’ tax base. Current policies to be soon implemented by the liberals will only fuel the fires of budgetary short falls. I suggest that our democrat friends return to their districts and listen to their people who have elected them. Maybe then they can help come up with some solutions instead of empty, baseless criticism.

I get amused when Henry Ross talks about career politicians. He has run for the Eupora board of alderman, mayor twice, circuit judge, state senator, and state house of representatives. He is a career politician, just not a successful one.

Haha very good one! Now I wonder, what platform would he be running on if he had been succesful. I bet it would be something like, experience is what we need in DC.
      Too funny.

….and in MS 04, while talking about Palazzo’s Facebook…is anyone aware of this post just this past Saturday?

    *********************************************************************
    May 8, 2010

Steven Palazzo Steamrolled through Harrison, Jackson, Stone, George,
Greene, Perry, and Forrest Counties today! Started the day watching
Senator Cochran speaking at the George County Centennial, and finished by welcoming Mike Lott to the team, and gave him 60 signs to distribute throughout Hattiesburg. Now going to dinner with my lovely wife. Great Job everyone!
    **********************************************************************

This discussion can be found way back in last Thursday’s notebook, but you might not have seen it since that story probably had scrolled off the main screen when the incident happened, unless you keep up with the posts made daily. In that case you are aware of it…if not, just some news for you that you might not have seen. While some dismissed it quickly as no big deal, others believe it was a big deal, since the most recognizable MIKE LOTT in the PineBelt is the former legislator who has been on board with Tegerdine’s campaign as a volunteer since the very beginning….and THAT Mike Lott is not the one mentioned in the Facebook post, but it sure as heck gave a lot of people who know that Mike Lott on the Gulf Coast and in other regions of the district the impression that it was one in the same. Some of those people of course, do not read this blog, and were not aware that Brett had checked with the Palazzo campaign to clarify that it was NOT the Mike Lott, former state representative, like so many people thought. So, what was the purpose of Palazzo posting this, since it is just not a common thing for a candidate to announce on Facebook that a specific person is putting out signs for you AND welcoming them to your team? Interesting question. I report, you decide.

Looks like he steamrolled himself really. Things seem to settle right where and how they should in the long run. For him to say he’s the most conservative candidate is really a hoot. He helped pass the sudafed bill which makes poor people go to another state or pay extra for a prescription. He did that to punish the the meth makers. His deplorable stance on emminent domain isn’t very conservative either. Having him in office would be like having the cat in the hat come over to help you with your spring cleaning.

Hmmm, somehow this reminds me of a band I listened to back in the 90s, called Cheap Trick.

So, has every conservative in the country seen the Chris Christie video by now? Glenn Beck called it ‘common sense porn’. The New Jersey Governor lays on an awesome response to a reporter’s question, using an old and outdated technique:

Say what you mean, and mean what you say.

Joe Tegerdine speaks the same way.

“Steve said I am the only true conservative candidate who can defeat Gene Taylor in the general election.”

Give me a break! That’s almost as funny as Wan McCain saying he is against amnesty for Illegal Aliens now. 1st Steve was against term limits now he is for them. Steve voted against Eminent Domain Reform several times, now he is for it. Steve voted to cut school funding but against selling the state Jet. It seems he is fine with our educational system being one of the worst in the nation, just so long at state legislators don’t have to fly coach. Lets not forget his vote to make Sudafed a prescription drug. So now we have to pay a doctor to diagnose Hay Fever and write a prescription. There is only 1 conservative in the 4th Congressional district race for congress. His Name is Joe Tegerdine

So you’re a big fan of Billy McCoy and the House Democrats? The state jet is used by the governor on business trips as he recruits new business for the state. You have a problem with that? And I am guessing you wanted Palazzo to support the Democrats plan to drain the rainy day fund to avoid education budget cuts? Doesn’t sound to conservative to me….

And I don’t know if Palazzo can beat Taylor, but I know that Tegerdine can not.

Valid points, except the last one. I believe Palazzo will not be able to pull conservative voters together….some of the Tea Party and other grassroots people, unlike me, are NOT going to vote for Palazzo no matter what you tell them or what reasons you give for Palazzo’s votes—they just seem him as the ‘establishment’ guy and they are tired of the “establishment quo”, if you know what I mean. Their vote for the Libertarian candidate over Palazzo will be a principled vote, but it will put Taylor back in office; they won’t care, and will sleep good at night knowing they voted their conscience. Tegerdine can pull votes from conservatives who call themselves Republican, Tea party, or whatever (I even know of some Taylor faithful of years past who are going to vote for Joe this time). That’s what it’s going to take to beat Gene, and Palazzo just doesn’t have it….among the other things he doesn’t have (like an ability to effectively communicate his points).

“The state jet is used by the governor on business trips as he recruits new business for the state. You have a problem with that?”

Yea that’s why that Liberal Sarah Palin Sold the Alaska state jet. Just to please the Democrats not to cut waste in the state budget. Haley Barbour can fly coach just like the rest of us!

By the way, Joe Tegerdine is probably not too interested with Billy McCoy right about now…I am sure he is VERY interested with the way Gene Taylor does things, since he IS, after all, running for CONGRESS….you know, at the FEDERAL LEVEL…surely you know that, since YOU know how GOVERNMENT WORKS !!

For those of you who think Tegerdine can’t win:
During the 2008 election, a candidate for Utah’s 3ed district, Jason Chaffetz was not even invited to the debates. None of the “establishment” thought that he had a chance of winning. He was out spent 6 to 1, but he started campaigning early and ran a true grass roots campaign. When he beat the incumbent in the primary, he let all of Utah know that business as usual was over!
Tegerdine started early, and has reached out to constituents all across MS 4. He has taken the time to get to know the people, and more importantly he has made himself available to anyone who wants to get to know him.

Republican dawg you think its smarter to pay the high cost of maintaining that jet instead of taking a regular flight like the rest of us? It’s much more forward looking to dump the teachers? Let them eat cake….Nay! Make it cake and ice cream!!! Duh!

Just glad to see Tegerdine is running on the Billy McCoy platform. It is clear yall don’t really have any idea on how governments actually works and operate but are just reiterating feel good talking points distributed by the Tegerdine campaign.

okay, Mr. Arrogant…who just do you think “ya’ll” are. Apparently we are not from “your group” who, as you say, “know how government really works”. Ever stop to think that is part of the problem—THE WAY GOVERNMENT WORKS ???!!!

By the way, some of “us” do, indeed, know how government works, whether you believe it or not, snoot.

You know how governments actually works? Wow! A haiku 4 U.

    Rail against darkness.

Mime in flames no one sees screams.

    Spring resumes unchanged.

You apparently have no idea how a campaign works do you. You think the talking points are distributed and everyone does as they’re told? That’s the difference between hired help and volunteers. By the way. Looks like the hired help model ain’t cutting it no mo! Oh the time. They are a changing… La lala

What are you thinking?
