GOP Candidates In MS-01 Talk To The Daily Journal
The Daily Journal had an unedited question and answer with Henry Ross, Alan Nunnelee, and Angela McGlowan in yesterday’s paper. You can check out the entire interview here, but I did want to highlight some of the more interesting and notable responses.
- McGlowan continued to tout her connections in Washington saying, “Through my experiences, I have built relationships that will allow me to go to Washington and bring prosperity back to Mississippi.” I’ve talked about this outsider yet insider play by McGlowan before. Llyod Gray with the Daily Journal called it a “difficult two-step,” but said she “pulls it off with flair.”
- Nunnelee didn’t shy away from his experience in the legislature which has been criticized by his opponents. He said, “I am proud of my conservative record of cutting taxes, controlling spending and making sure Mississippi lives within its means. I’m also proud to have been a leader in the Senate on pro-life issues. I have learned that it is one thing to talk about conservative values and another thing to convert those values into effective conservative public policy.”
- When talking about priorities, McGlowan’s top concern was cutting taxes. She said, “Whether in Jackson or Washington, taxes are out of control.” The comment about Jackson was an obvious knock on Nunnelee. The Mississippi legislature is obviously far from perfect but I would say it is one of the most fiscally conservative in the nation. McGlowan’s other priorities includes ending wasteful spending and stopping policies that undermine conservative values.
- Ross said his top three priorities were economic recovery, repealing and disabling the new healthcare legislation, and securing our borders. Nunnelee’s priorities included jobs and economic prosperity, fiscal responsibility, and national security.
- McGlowan called public service a “sacrifice, not a career,” adding “I am not an incumbent politician” when asked what distinguishes her from others. Ross touted his support the federal marriage amendment, term limits, freezing federal spending, reforming welfare, and impeaching Supreme Court justices who violate the Constitution, while Nunnelee talked about his record in the legislature and business career.
- Ross said the principal national security threat came from Islamic fanaticism while Nunnelee said our challenges come from the “changing global environment.” They both gave similar solutions for handling the threats. McGlowan took a different turn and called illegal immigration the largest threat we face, and also mentioned oil dependency among our main concerns.
There is a lot more in the original article, this is just some of the more interesting things I have picked out.

Enjoyed the article and also the bloggs at the bottom. The post that said “Why do they call Nunnelee a businessman from Tupelo when all he has ever done is work for his daddy?” Interesting. Seems that the insurance business that Nunnelee claims he has learned his ability to manage money/budgeting, making payroll, etc. has been owned by Nunnelee’s father. Come on!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Besides that he has served in the Mississippi legislature for 15 years and our state still is lowest in education, lowest in wages, and carries high unemployment even in the best of times to use some of Wally Pangs remarks. Makes you wonder – why vote for someone like that? Can someone tell me what this man has done specifically to help these issues? Childers will have a party with this guy if he wins the primary. God help us all.
Mr. Childers… is that you again.
Sam Hall…is that you?
You better hope it isn’t because if it was Mr. Nunnelee would be in serious trouble.
It’s amazing that a good dem like yourself would spend so much time on a conservative sight like this!
Hey TPL II,
We are all still waiting on that polling data you claimed to have been read at a debate. But like a guy over on Y’all politics said if Ross really had good polling info he would release it. When all else fails make up lies and call names. It’s easy when you do not use your real name, right TPLII.
Hey Red,
What is your real name? I hadn’t thought about lying under an assumed name before – seems like you have though – hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm!
You saw the release from the Ross camp – who cares what you believe, you will see for yourself on June 1.
You mean the release where they say that they are winning because Nunnelee is raising money?
Tom and Red,
What did I write in the post at the top of page that is not true? Every bit of it can be verified. You two only know how to be vile when you are cornered with the truth. What a miserable life you must have when that is what you do best. What great things does Nunnelee do, or has done that would make you feel he will change Washington. He couldn’t ever make a difference in the State legislature – look at what I wrote. He has never had a real job – Daddy has always taken care of him. And all he has is a bunch of morans that jump because he is connected at a State level. Why don’t you start looking at the truth – the real picture before you throw your vote away.
You didn’t answer the question about the Ross release. Doesn’t is say Ross is in a horse race because Nunnelee is raising money? What a joke!
Tom,
Y’all politics is a Nunnelee supportive blogg. Alan makes it known to everyone that he has donated to Nunnelee’s campaign so what did you expect to hear from them. You may have a comprehension problem because the article states that Nunnelee is out raising money for more ads and that verifies that he is worried and knows that it is neck and neck.
Tom,
TPL II just keeps making my point. “ITS” pants are on fire because it is a liar. Never anything but nasty comments. Such anger and hate in the heart of TPL II. You know Nunnelee is someones husband, father, and grandfather. TPL II just keeps on. I would be ashamed but what do you expect from a liberal democrat.
Do you know what I dislike the most about Ross? YOU!! You have done more damage to him than anyone or anything else.
This is to you TPLII.
Red,
Did I get under your skin? How does it feel? Payback is —-, isn’t it. I watched you make fun of a handicapped person because he was for another candidate, and I dropped off of here because of you, your friends and your unkind comments. If you are unhappy and disgusted because I told the truth about your candidate – great! A lesson learned, I hope. Everyone’s opinion is important. Some people have only this in their lives and you do your best to take all the joy out of it. Nunnelee is someone’s father, brother, etc. and Angela McGlowan is someone’s wife and daughter, and Henry Ross is someone’s father, husband. They all deserve respect from you and everyone else.
It is ok for you to say anything about the other candidates but when the tables are turned what do you do? The worst thing about Nunnelee is you!
TPLII, do you mean that you made those slurs to get back at other bloggers? You know most of what you said is part truths. You are one cold blooded Machevilian dude. Actually , I think one of the worst things a person can do is to flaunt their faith and allow their flunkies to pull underhanded and less than honest stunts like ole Marv did this week. Hope you are above that.
Marmie,
I am not a cold blooded dude, in fact my heart goes out to the people that get beaten down on this site. I did not like Grizz any better than anyone else but the comments made to him were totally out of line. My comments to Red and Tom are heartfelt. I backed down in the past and even stopped blogging because of people like them and now I am fighting back. My only hope is that they will finally stop attacking people and want to discuss the issues at hand intelligently. I tried other ways before but the nicer I tried to be the worse they got. This is all I will say about this.
As to my comments on Nunnelee, they are truthful all the way.
PS who is Marv and what did he do?
ask Ross
Won’t get that chance before the election.
No, your comments are not the truth, they are subjective , not factual. Your hatred of Nunnelee has blinded you.
So long boys, I’m voting for Wally Pang!
What are you talking about?
I do not hate Nunnelee. I am sure he is a fine person. Just do not think he can do the job that is necessary. I am partially blind but not from hatred.
I went after Grizz because he called people rascist, stupid, and communist. You never discuss the issues. We are still waiting for the polling data.
Red,
You really do have a comprehension problem don’t you. Did you not read the posting here by Brett. And Grizz was protecting himself from you. He never called anyone anything until you and your buddies started in on him. Don’ try to justify what you did – it won’t work. This is my last post on this.
Is that your new saying “comprehension problem?” Brett was not talking to me. Grizz did say those things to anyone who commented negatively about McGlowan. I have no buddies on here. I know this is all you have but your ugliness has been over the top. Like I said before you have damaged your candidate. Is that all it took to get rid of you?
Nunnelee Statement
“I’m proud to have played a role in making Mississippi is the safest place for unborn children and I will continue to fight on their behalf.”
Red, thanks for posting this quote. Nunnelee is a true conservative who has been fighting while the rest have been talking. That is why I support him and that is why Childers is so afraid of him. He actually does what he says and he is willing to stand up for conservative values no matter who is watching.
Can’t help but notice that. He has a proven record of making the cuts conservatives claim they want.
