Beers and Burgers?

July 26, 2010

That was the name of last week’s fundraiser for Sen. Roger Wicker in Washington. The $500 an individual event featured many GOP donors as well as PACs on the invite (which is below). Wicker, in his first term as a Senator, has raised more than $900,000 this election cycle (more than 10x that of Sen. Thad Cochran), while spending more than $500,000 with a 2012 re-election date coming in a little more than two years. He has a pretty modest $400,000 or so cash on hand although that (and whatever he receives in the next two years) should be enough to fend off any Democratic challengers who will be waiting for 2014 (assuming Cochran doesn’t retire before than).

There is nothing modest about the $2.1 million Bennie Thompson has sitting in the bank. The Congressman will most likely add to that total at a $500 an individual event in D.C. tomorrow night.

I got a chance to look through Thompson’s latest FEC filings yesterday and nothing outside the usual there (usual for Thompson being out of state contributions). One of the few in-state donations came from Democratic gubernatorial hopeful Bill Luckett, who made his first donation to Thompson this cycle. That leads to this question- will Thompson get involved in the Democratic primary for governor next year? You wouldn’t think so.
