Childers New Ad, Nunnelee Responds
The Travis Childers campaign is out with their third campaign spot of the election, and the second in a row targeting Alan Nunnelee. Here is the ad:
You may not have noticed it, but the Childers camp used some pretty interesting sourcing for their referencing. Here is a screen shot of what I am talking about, at the 19 second mark:

The Nunnelee camp is charging that Childers is using anonymous commentors on both the Columbus Dispatch and the HuckPAC (Mike Huckabee) blog who state that Nunnelee supports the Fair Tax, which Childers is referencing when he says Nunnelee supports a 23 percent sales tax on your Ole Miss hat, and everything else. Here is a link to where it appears on HuckPAC, and here is the link to the Columbus Dispatch. You’ll see comments in both places saying Nunnelee supports the Fair Tax, and that he said so on his Facebook page.
Here is what Nunnelee said in response: “Congressman Childers is making things up and wants you to believe they are fact. In his latest TV ad, he cites anonymous comments on blogs, and claims that those statements are coming from Alan Nunnelee.”
The rest of the presser is below the fold.
“The Congressman is desperate. But who can blame him? He certainly can’t run on his record or he’d have to talk about:
The fact that North Mississippi has lost 22,000 jobs since he’s been in office.
The fact that he’s signed on for $2.5 trillion in new federal spending.
The fact that he will not vote to repeal ObamaCare.
The fact that he’s voted for billions in tax increases including the Death Tax.
The fact that he’s voted for union interests, including an attempt to unionize Federal Express.
The fact that he voted for gay rights hidden in a military spending bill.
The fact that he voted to put Nancy Pelosi in the third highest office in the land.
Those are the facts, not statements pulled from thin air. Travis Childers is willing to say anything to make the voters forget about his record.”
I support the fair tax, after we get rid of the income tax.
Doug,
I also support the Fair Tax. While I understand your sentiment and your fear, the only way to rid ourselves of the income tax is through a Consititutional amendment, which is a lengthy process AND doable. However, if you are just going to support the Fair Tax only after ‘we rid ourselves of the income tax,’ will we really need your support? How many decades are you going to sit and wait?
The Fair Tax is designed to replace the income tax, be revenue neutral, end payroll deductions, pay for our current obligations… Now is the time!
For those who don’t know:
“The FairTax actually eliminates and reimburses all federal taxes for those below the poverty line. This is accomplished through the universal prebate and by eliminating the highly regressive FICA payroll tax. Today, low and moderate income Americans pay far more in FICA taxes than income taxes. Those spending at twice the poverty level pay a FairTax of only 11.5 percent — a rate much lower than the income and payroll tax burden they bear today. Meanwhile, the wealthy pay the 23 percent retail sales tax on their retail purchases.
Under the federal income tax, slow economic growth and recessions have a disproportionately adverse impact on lower-income families. Breadwinners in these families are more likely to lose their jobs, are less likely to have the resources to weather bad economic times, and are more in need of the initial employment opportunities that a dynamic, growing economy provides. Retaining the present tax system makes economic progress needlessly slow and frustrates attempts at upward mobility through hard work and savings, thus harming low-income taxpayers the most.
In contrast, the FairTax dramatically improves economic growth and wage rates for all, but especially for lower-income families and individuals. In addition to receiving the monthly FairTax prebate, these taxpayers are freed from regressive payroll taxes, the federal income tax, and the compliance burdens associated with each. They pay no more business taxes hidden in the price of goods and services, and used goods are tax free.
How can the FairTax generate lower net tax rates for everyone and still pay for the same real government expenditures? The answer is two-fold. Firstly, the tax base is dramatically widened by including consumer spending from the underground economy (estimated at $1.5 trillion annually), and by including illegal immigrants, those who escape their fair share today through loopholes and gimmicks. In addition, 40 million foreign tourists a year will become American taxpayers as consumers here. Secondly, not everyone’s average net tax burden falls. For households whose major economic resource is accumulated wealth, the FairTax will deliver a net tax hike compared to the current system.
Consider, for example, your typical billionaire, of which America now has more than 400. These fortunate few are invested primarily in equities on which they pay taxes at a 15 percent rate, whether their income comes in the form of capital gains or dividends. In addition to having the income from their wealth taxed at a low rate, the principal of their wealth is completely untaxed either directly or indirectly. Assuming they and their heirs spend only the income earned on the wealth each year, the tax rate today is 15 percent. In contrast, under the FairTax, the effective tax rate is 23 percent. Hence, the very wealthy will pay more taxes when the FairTax is enacted. In a nutshell, those who spend more will pay more but low, moderate and middle income taxpayers will benefit from the greatest gains in reduced tax liabilities.” Fairtax.org.
“Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy, its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery.” –Winston Churchill
It is a National Sales Tax. It has been the death nail for every republican that agrees to the out of touch idea. Ronald Reagan once said “And I have to point out that government doesn’t tax to get the money it needs, government always needs the money it gets.” In other words if you want less government we have to give less money. That is why the people do not want a National Sales Tax. Republicans please don’t blow this chance.
Want to know why the Fair Tax has not been enacted yet?
Both parties have been accustomed to the power the income tax brings. Dems love it because they see it as a method to control the income levels of every citizen of the U.S. (If Karl Marx were alive I’m sure he’d be having a wet dream every night because of it) Both use it to win votes with the “soak the rich” “help the poor” variations and both will spend time spreading misinformation because it would be harder to sell to the voting public how much THEY are needed in Washington if the voting public no longer has their money confiscated from their paychecks as they earn it and are no longer punished for what is sane, logical and prudent in a capitalist society: working, saving and investing. Even if some critics are right and “special interests” start doing to the Fair Tax code what they’ve done to the income tax code, how much influence are they really going to have when the American public gets to keep 100% of their paychecks and, unlike under the income tax, has the ability to choose on an individual basis how much and when they are taxed?
Unless the Fair Tax is enacted and the income tax is eliminated, “We the people” in a true sense of the word, will continue being slaves to a government that is supposed to be “for us, by us.”
The recent rise of the Tea Party suggests to me that there are more people, like me, in the United States that support the Fair Tax than you or any “establishment man” realize. The Dems, for example, don’t seem to realize that because they can win elections by using the same tired rhetoric that, though people may vote for them for a handout, it does not necessarily follow that those same voters agree with their policies and, given the opportunity will support an effort to keep ALL of their paychecks such as with the Fair Tax. We, the “quiet majority”, are always around. Because you don’t often hear from us doesn’t mean you can discount us.
My question to you is are you an “establishment man” or would you rather support something that could be the best thing to happen to the U.S. and provide the best opportunity for we who are poor, to be something other than poor all our lives? I believe that is found in the Fair Tax and I will support it every time I get a chance and if the Dems/Reps want my vote, they will support the Fair Tax. If they just want to continue to use me any my vote, I’ll vote to toss their a-$e$$ OUT!

Max,
That is why we must stop all New Taxes and start eliminating the other taxes. The less the government has the less government can grow. All your benefits to the National Sales Tax, add up to a HUGE Central Government. I’m sorry, that makes you part of the problem. Ronald Reagan said “In the present crisis, government is not the solution to our problem; government is the problem.” I second that resolution. Republicans keep forgetting the reason they lost power is they don’t listen to what Reagan said.
If your solution involves keeping an income tax, you’re wrong. You speak of eliminating taxes but you want to keep the income tax? To me, it sounds as though you’re speaking from both sides of your mouth.
“Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy, its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery.” –Winston Churchill
Do you even know what you are talking about?
The solution is to starve government by lowering the amount it receives from the people. The ultimate goal is to shrink government to the bare minimum. The way we do it is to cut all taxes including the income tax. We can not forget about the fees and fines that the government has continued to create and increase. The way we pay for everything is with a tariff. If we raise a 25% tariff on the 50 trillion dollar trade defict each year, then we will receive more than enough to pay for the government.
The repercutions would be very bennificial to the American owned small businesses. We know that small businesses are the backbone of our economy and do most the hiring. Small businesses would have a combination of no taxes and less fees andan increased share of the markets. The economy will grow, we’ll pay no taxes, government will be out of our business, and life will be good.
The national sales tax is unconstitutional.
That quote comes from a man that lived under the rule of an Empire with a Monarchy……
Doesn’t matter. I ran across it and I think it sums up the “class warfare” arguments/debates I’ve ran across in a true, concise statement. So I use it.

This commentary is wonderful, and without citizens that are as educated and plugged in as yall we (our country) wouldn’t stand a chance. But folks, we are letting Travis Childers off the hook. This is the Democrat incumbent’s second attack ad, and it’s working; the subject of conversation has been changed.
Before, Childers lied about Nunnelee’s stance on Social Security trying to make it an issue rather than talking about our unemployment and our debt. Nunnelee signs the pledge taking SS off the table (and issued a challenge to Childers to commit to repealing ObamaCare….he’s said nothing) and within a week a new attack ad is up with a new lie, this time trying to make the topic of conversation the Fair Tax rather than our unemployment and our debt.
He’s lied about property taxes; as a former county government official Travis KNOWS property taxes are regulated by county government. He’s told half truths on the hospital tax; it was the result of yet another federal mandate related to healthcare (this time medicaid). He’s lied about the Fair Tax; he’s citing Facebook and comments sections of internet blogs. He won’t talk jobs. He won’t talk talk debt. He won’t talk ObamaCare. He won’t talk about his past, and were he to win, his future support of Nancy Pelosi. He even has the audacity to bring up taxes when he’s supported trillions in Stimulus spending that resulted directly in exponentially higher national debt and tax increases across the board.
But he will talk lies. And he’ll spend hundreds of thousands to flood the airwaves with those lies while North Mississippians can’t even afford to spend a hundred dollars at the grocery store feeding their family. Don’t we deserve the truth, and don’t we deserve better results? At the very least, don’t we deserve a discussion on the issues that matter the most to North Mississippians? I believe so, and each attempt by Travis to change the subject and attack his opponent is even more pathetic than the last.
I agree with you “just sayin”. Travis and Jamie Frank’s liberal agenda just got moved a step closer to victory with this latest ad. So many people are not as aware of what a lie this is. I still cannot believe that a sitting congressman would choose to LIE about his incumbent and use anonymous blog posts to do it.
I’m sorry but, you didn’t expect a liberal congressman to lie ?
I do understand your sentiment though. I see similar tactics used all the time when it comes to debating the Fair Tax.

Brenda, believe that a sitting congressman would lie and have his flunkies lie for him. I have read their posts on this site in the past.
To be fair, I’ve never been on this site before and when I read her comment, I thought “surely I’ve misunderstood.” It just struck me as funny.
i mean his “opponent” not incumbent.
Any relation of Alan Keyes, by chance?
I like the fair tax because it taxes everyone.
For example, If a drug dealer gets paid in cash only then he shows no income and pays no income tax.
He may even get to use social programs for food, housing, child care, etc. because he shows no income, but with the fair tax when he buys that brand new 60k car with 10k wheels he will pay taxes just like the working person.
However, it is a must that the fair tax gets rid of all other taxes or the clowns in Washington will try to have both a sales tax and income tax.
The only thing I can say is I don’t know any Fair Tax supporter who wants to have both the income tax and the Fair Tax. That certainly isn’t our goal. Enough support (votes) and WE control the process. Do not fail to support it because of your understandable fear.
I am only related to Alan Keyes in ideology. Nevertheless, I will claim him as family because we are both believers in Jesus Christ.
dontreadonme,
Why do you think the Fair Tax is unconstitutional and am I correct in saying that you support removing all taxes, etc. from us and getting revenue in tariffs on imports? Have I understood you correctly?
MaxSt,
I read the Constitution again, and did not read where the congress has power to tax every business transaction. I did find Sec. 8.2 Congress may borrow money on the credit of the United States. 8.5 To coin Money and regulate the Value of money. 8.1 gives them the power to collect Taxes, Duties, Imposts and Excises to pay the Debt. So, the Congress members have borrowed to much money, they have droped the value of money, but they only collect taxes and fees from their citizens. The Congress needs to start collecting Imposts and Duties to help pay for our government. An impost and duty placed on imports, with the large trade deficit, would pay for what we need. There is no need for a National Sales Tax. If the republican party is supporting this New Tax, then I will not support them any more. The reason republicans lost power was because they listen to idoits. I will not support anyone that agrees with such. I can see it now, republicans win the House and split the Senate. Obama, willing to look bi partison, agrees with the republican Congress to a National Sales Tax. We will have all the taxes that we currently have, and a 23% National Sales Tax. Meanwhile imports continue to dominate the markets and it does not cost anything. I’ve got it! America free for foriegners and Costly for Citizens.
How about the power to raise duties, excises and imposts? Find that, yet?
What do you think an income tax does? Give them cotton candy and gumdrups? How about the state income taxes and state sales taxes (45 states have a sales tax)? Every one of them is “taxing every business transaction.” Whether you agree to or not, those taxes are a part of “every business transaction” and every product. That is not ideological. That is a fact.
Don’t get me wrong. If you support removing all taxes and use import taxes, etc. instead for revenue, great. Love the idea. I’d support it. I really, truly would. But, as far as I know, that brings the total number of supporters to two. Think we could make it happen in November? I’m afraid that’s not likely nor would it be likely to happen anytime in the next two years. It’s taken us (Fair Tax supporters) ten years to get to this point. Why? Because of the propaganda put out by people who have a vested interest in keeping an income tax around, is parrotted by the critics from the same old tired sources we have proven wrong time and time again. How much flack do you think your plan would get? (“hurts the poor,” “destroys the middle class,” “rapes seniors,” “eats children for breakfast,” “is unconstitutional” etc. ) Or you do honestly believe your plan would sail through? I bet the same people would be attacking your plan that attack the Fair Tax and do so using lies and misrepresentation just like they do us.
If you want to support the Dems instead in the meantime, go ahead. I’m sure they will help you to keep the income tax. They might even raise your rates for you, just to make you feel better. Expect them to bring you higher rates and higher prices. If they win, enjoy your “prosperity.”
“Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy, its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery.” –Winston Churchill
Cheers.
Out.
BTW, critics would no doubt hire experts to study the economic impact of your plan to criticize it. If YOU, or any organization you are with, hires experts to study the economic impact of your plan, they will accuse YOU of bias.
You are right! It is a Reserved Power not Enumerated Power.
Yea, I quoted it. The only way to getour economy started is to think out of the box. An impost and duty on imports would help balace the trade defecit, it will pay on the national debt, and open new markets for locally owned small business. A 23 % National Sales Tax would limit the amount of business transations. Many people would trade their products and avoid the tax as much as possible. The truth is the National Sales Tax (fair tax) is corporate americas way to pass their heavy tax burden on to the poor and less fortunate.
