Polling From Lieutenant Governor’s Race
Here is an interesting piece from Geoff Ponder with the Sun Herald. According to political operatives he has spoken with, Sen. Billy Hewes is “within striking distance” of Treasurer Tate Reeves in the Republican primary to replace Phil Bryant as lieutenant governor.
Here is what the article said:
In name recognition among Republican primary voters, Reeves was ahead 40 percent to 20 percent. But in the “head-to-head,” if voters had to choose today, Reeves’ lead was slim, 16 percent to 10 percent.
Reeves is obviously the front runner at this point. But Hewes is doing a good job of taking advantage of this “free-period” of sorts with Reeves not officially in the race. At the same time, Hewes has already been on the airwaves. As for now, I’m looking forward to seeing what the 2010 campaign finance numbers look like.

I don’t understand the polling with Reeves receiving only 40% name recognition among Republican primary voters. These are supposed to be the more educated, political wise, voters in the state. He has been on statewide ballots twice and is regularly sending out some type correspondence to Republicans. I think it is only fair to reveal the pollsters and to share the framing of the questions.
If I had them, I would.
Considering where Billy Hewes is from and where the Sun Herald is located, I really wouldn’t put a lot of stock in the numbers UNLESS I could actually see them and the way the questions were skewed. Also, it would be important to see exactly what areas of Mississippi were targeted.
I would rather see the geographic break down than the questions. In a R primary, if it isn’t from 12 specific counties, it really isn’t telling us much.
