Marking The 38th Anniversary Of Roe

January 25, 2011

Yesterday, on the 38th anniversary of the infamous Roe v. Wade decision legalizing abortion throughout the country, Sen. Roger Wicker announced that he will introduce the Life at Conception Act which would define when life begins.

Wicker added this: “The sanctity of human life for all, including the unborn, is something that is deeply rooted in my beliefs and reflected in the values of Mississippians. I am proud to introduce legislation that would settle this important life issue once and for all. January is Sanctity of Human Life month, so this is a good time to remember how special the gift of life truly is.”

** Rep. Gregg Harper made this statement on Twitter: “The 38th annual March for Life Rally takes place today in DC. I will continue to support legislation that seeks to protect the unborn.”

Statements on Palazzo’s chairmanship. After Rep. Steven Palazzo was named chairman of the House Subcommittee on Space and Aeronautics committee, he sent out a press release with these statements.

From Haley Barbour: “I am pleased Rep. Palazzo has been named Chairman of the House Subcommittee on Space and Aeronautics. Aerospace and technology play a vital role in the economy of South Mississippi, and it is important our state has a voice in the development of space and aeronautical policy. It shows the regard and respect the Republican Party has for our state that a freshman Congressman would get this vital appointment. Congressman Taylor, a conservative Democrat, had to wait some 15 years to get a subcommittee chairmanship from the Democrats, but the Republicans are giving one to Congressman Palazzo his first year.”

From Patrick Scheuermann, director of NASA’s Stennis Space Center: “This is outstanding news. Having Congressman Palazzo serve as chairman of the subcommittee responsible for shaping space policy is great for the employees and mission of NASA and Stennis Space Center.”

From the left… Organizing for America is hosting a state of the union watch party tonight at Hal & Mals in Jackson. The event begins at 6:30. You can get more information here.

** Last week, on the anniversary of the Citizens United decision, MoveOn.org sent out an email asking you to contact your state legislators to support a constitutional amendment to overturn the decision.

That’s not much of a shock, but thought the subject of the e-mail was pretty interesting: “You’re a person. Toyota isn’t.” Don’t know if that was the standard headline throughout the country, but they might want to check and see if the company they are bashing is in the process of bringing thousands of job to that particular state.
