More Thoughts On Barbour’s Decision
Shortly after Haley Barbour made the rather surprising announcement that he will not be a candidate for president, we posted five early thoughts on the decision. Without further ado, here are five more (and likely final) thoughts:
6) I said I was shocked and that appears to be a good word to use around Barbour headquarters today. According to National Review only Henry Barbour and a small group of top aides were aware of the governor’s decision before today. Henry, Haley’s top surrogate on Twitter, last talked campaign yesterday stating that they are hoping to be back in Iowa soon. Last night, Henry had responded to various tweets about his uncle.
7) From what we have now read on political websites and in the comments I have heard from people who I have spoken with on this decision, it truly appears that time and commitment were the factors causing Barbour to opt against a run; something the 63 year old regarded as a 10 year commitment. While Barbour was giving the signs that would indicate he was running, others are saying that the governor spent that time trying to convince himself to run; which obviously isn’t where you need to be when prepping a presidential run.
8 According to Politico, here is what was in the works for Barbour: A May 2 launch, followed by trips to the key states of Iowa, New Hampshire, South Carolina, Nevada, and Florida before a May 7 home-state fundraiser in Jackson to round out the week. A major fundraiser in New York City for later in the month was also planned.
9) Here was the take on Drudge Report yesterday (they have a knack for finding the most interesting pictures):

10) As for how this affects the 2012 field, we will see what happens in the coming days and weeks. There was always talk that either Barbour or Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels would be running- but not both- so is Daniels in? Also, there is the famed Barbour Rolodex of donors as well as loyal supporters within the party. They are now fair game. And then there is Barbour himself. Will he made a public endorsement during the primary?
