Mettetal Won’t Seek Re-Election

May 20, 2011

Sen. Nolan Mettetal (R-Sardis) announced on Wednesday that he will not seek re-election for the seat he has held since 1995. Mettetal had previously won election as a Democrat, fought off a primary challenge from the left in 2007, and since changed parties. Following the decision on redistricting, he faced a district that had a BVAP over 40 percent.

Mettetal, however, has said he isn’t necessarily done with politics. He may even run for the open HD 10 seat which includes Republican Doug Jones and Democrat Jordan Bankhead. In fact, it seemed likely based on some of his comments.

At this point, Democrat Steve Hale, former mayor of Senatobia, is the only qualified candidate.

Nolan is running for the House seat currently held by Warner McBride (District 10). Warner is not running for reelction so the seat is an open seat. Haley Barbour got 70.7% of the vote in District 10 in 2007.

Also running for this seat are Doug Jones (R) from Batesville and Jordan Bankhead (D) from around Oxford.
