Tuesday Afternoon Election Notebook
A couple notes on the 2011 elections…
** Tate Reeves, fresh of new poll numbers showing a commanding lead in the lieutenant governor’s race, released a new campaign spot this morning. You can check out the ad here.
** Dave Dennis got a nice writeup in Politico yesterday. In looking at recent movements in 2011 and 2012 gubernatorial races, David Catanese called Dennis the winner for the month of May.
Here is what he said: “The off-year gubernatorial primary is just two months away and Gulfport businessman Dave Dennis is on the air to try to boost his name identification and make inroads against Lt. Gov. Phil Bryant. Bryant is the fundraising leader and front-runner, while on the Democratic side, businessman Bill Luckett is outpacing Hattiesburg Mayor Johnny Dupree.”
** The latest press release from the MSGOP made note of Terry Stewart and Deborah Tierce, Republican candidates who have qualified to run for House District 21. Rep. Donnie Bell is the Democratic incumbent. HD 21 remains a strong yellow dog district giving Haley Barbour just 54 percent of the vote in 2007 despite a relatively low BVAP (in the upper-teens).
** One of Henry Barbour’s latest tweets said this about the legislative elections: “June 1 filing deadline 4 MS Leg candidates. GOP has recruited our strongest field of candidates ever setting up GOP spkr in 2012.”
** Sean Tindell, a candidate for SD 49, has a fundraiser tomorrow in Gulfport. You can check out the invite here. SD 49 is the seat currently held by Sen. Billy Hewes, who is, of course, leaving the seat to run for lieutenant governor.
