Wednesday Morning Election Notebook
A couple notes on the 2011 elections…
** A coalition of young leaders supporting Phil Bryant will meet today at Brent’s Drugs. You can get more information on the free event here. There is also a Facebook page dedicated to the group.
** Tate Reeves and Billy Hewes will participate in their ninth joint forum later today at the Mississippi Association of Supervisors Forum in Biloxi.
** Billy Hewes spoke with the Clarion-Ledger for this article, and he said right now, “It’s all about getting known.”
** Lynn Fitch has a fundraiser lined up for June 23 in Oxford. Outgoing Rep. Noal Akins is listed as a host. Check out the invite here.
** The Gulf Coast 912 Project has issued four endorsements for the upcoming elections. They endorsed Dave Dennis for governor, Steve Simpson for attorney general, Delbert Hosemann for secretary of state and Lee Yancey for treasurer. On July 18, they will take a vote for endorsement in the lieutenant governor’s race.
** The Daily Journal has analysis of a couple long-shot Republican candidates who are investing heavily in their campaign. Pearl River County Supervisor Hudson Holliday has donated more than $515,000 to his campaign, while Moss Point businessman Ron Williams has spent more than $375,000 on his behalf.
** As we mentioned yesterday, Democratic gubernatorial candidates Johnny DuPree and Bill Luckett announced legislative endorsements one each side. Check them out here.
** Rep. Mark Baker, House Republican Conference Leader, has officially endorsed Jeff Smith in his primary contest against Jack Larmour. You can check out the letter here. Also, Smith said this on Facebook: “Officially endorsed by Mississippi House Republican Conference Leader Mark Baker in my primary race! I humbly appreciate the support!”
I’m sure I’ve been told the Tea Party groups were not going to endorse yet I see Coast 912 endorsed a candidate in the governor’s race. I wonder if they vetted all the candidates before doing so; did they at least have all candidates appear before them?
Oh well, the GOP club may be lulling some Tea Party types into believing they can belong. I think the Tea Party strength is in urging individuals to support those candidate that put the principles embraced by most Tea Party followers above any party loyalty.
Dennis is a likeable person but he’s been climbing up the GOP club ladder, serving in various offices, to become an accepted club member.
Last year there were a number of instances where strong Tea Party support elected truly conservative candidates to office as Republicans while those individual candidates were not supported by the GOP club in their election.
Charlie your right on point. I think they are holding a grudge over last years election. I am disappointed to see that the coast 912 project does not stand on principle like the Tea Party Patriots.
