Getting Ready For The Neshoba County Fair

July 11, 2011

Political speaking at the Neshoba County Fair kicks off two weeks from tomorrow with candidates for local office taking the lead on Tuesday, July 26. The statewide candidates will be on Wednesday and Thursday.

Sid Salter has a full listing of the speakers and times on his blog here and here are some quick notes:

Stacey Pickering and Mike Chaney, running against only token opposition, will speak on Wednesday at 10 and 10:10. They will be followed by outgoing Agriculture Commissioner Lester Spell. At 10:40, Billy Hewes will speak followed by Tate Reeves at 10:50. After lunch, Steve Simpson will speak followed by Jim Hood at 1:10. The candidates for commissioner of agriculture and insurance will begin speaking at 1:20. The three Republicans and one Democrat will speak in this order: Max Phillips, Joel Gill, Cindy Hyde-Smith, and Dannie Reed.

On Thursday, Lee Yancey will be the first of the main treasurer candidates to take the podium. He will speak at 9, and be immediately followed by Connie Moran, Lynn Fitch, and Lucien Smith. Following Smith will be Ricky Dombrowski at 9:40, and then the incumbent he is challenging- Delbert Hosemann- at 9:50.

Haley Barbour will speak for the last time as governor at 10:40. Before his speech the four main candidates to replace will speak. This includes: Bill Luckett at 10, followed by Dave Dennis, Johnny DuPree, and Phil Bryant right before the governor. Six other candidates for governor will speak after lunch to wrap this year’s political speaking.

As for our coverage, we will be at Neshoba on Wednesday and Thursday with reports each evening. Throughout the day, we will likely be most active on Twitter and even if you are not a registered user, you can still view our tweets here.

Always a great time and it brings back a little nostalgia to a political arena filled with twitter accounts and internet banner ads. I love hearing these speeches during election year and this year should be filled with speeches as hot as the weather since primaries are just around the corner!
