Mapping Out Fitch’s Runoff Victory

August 25, 2011

Lynn Fitch won the Republican nomination for state treasurer on Tuesday after winning majorities in all but four of the key GOP primary counties. She led a split three-way field in the first round with 38 percent of the vote and captured 53 percent in the runoff.

Here is a map detailing the county-by-county results (Fitch in red; Yancey in blue):

She continued a strong showing in the metro area, winning 60 percent in Madison and 61 percent in Hinds. This was better than Lee Yancey’s performance in Rankin where he was at 55 percent. On Tuesday, Rankin provided about 13 percent of the overall vote, but Yancey would have needed to be at about 75 percent in home county based on his vote in the other counties.

Fitch also won every county that she won on August 2. This includes (along with Madison and Hinds): Simpson, Lincoln, Marion, Forrest, Hancock, and Harrison. She also flipped Lauderdale, a county Yancey led by 13 points in the first round. She won win it by six on Tuesday.

The counties that we deemed in play following the first round of voting were Desoto, Jones, Lamar, Pearl River, and Jackson. Fitch would carry all those counties except for Jackson. (Jackson also happens to be the home county of Connie Moran, Fitch’s Democratic opponent).
