Democrats Unhinged In HD83

October 17, 2011

As we have talked about in the various previews of competitive House races, Republican Greg Snowden is being challenged by Democrat Gary Houston in the Meridian based HD 83 seat. Also in the race is Sam Thompson, running as an independent, a black preacher who might as well be the devil as far as the Black Caucus is concerned. And that’s not me speaking…

A few weeks ago the Black Caucus staged a rally in Meridian in support of Houston. I am told these LBC members from the House were there: Omeria Scott, Adrian Wooten, Robert Johnson, Credell Calhoun, Alyce Clarke, and Mary Coleman. From the Senate, or the plantation as Houston supporters refer to it as, was Kenny Wayne Jones. How many Black Caucus rallies have been held where they endorse a candidate? Haven’t heard of any. The rally was not intended to boost Houston, but to hurt Thompson.

I’ve been told Houston has been attending many of these rallies, more so than actually campaigning. Thompson, though, is actually campaigning. We recently got video from another one of these rallies, this one held at the 5th Street Baptist Church in Meridian. Head of that church? William Brown. Residents in Lauderdale county may remember him as a former Democratic supervisor who pled guilty, and agreed to resign, as part of Operation Pretense. Here is video of Democratic Executive Director Rickey Cole speaking at this upstanding church:

And here is another video from the same political event, this one with Rep. Calhoun, Sen. Robert Jackson, and others:

Besides the fact that Mississippi Democrats are aligning themselves with a felon, the tax-exempt status of the church ought to be called into question. (Here are the filings with the secretary of state’s office). Of course, we all know this isn’t the only black church in the state holding events like this. Just most don’t get publicized and put online. This is obviously made for a very limited audience and not for full distribution. For example, do you think Cole was trumping up the race card in a way that would make Jesse Jackson jealous when he recently held a press conference in Fulton?

But throughout the country, it is a rite of passage for Democrats to speak at black churches. As far as I know, they all get a free pass to stage political events. D.C. is likely too scared to take them on. But that doesn’t it make any more right than teachers using school email to organize political events during the school day.

First of all, as a person of color, I’ve always felt it was inappropriate to utilize church as means for a political platform. I truly believe that this in violation of the separation of church and state. I also think that encouraging felons to vote, of course some have a right to do so, that act alone reeks of desperation from someone who doesn’t really care how he gets his votes just as long as he gets them. I’ve yet to see Mr. Houston actually do any real campaigning just mostly playing the race card even at the expense of a fellow African-American, Mr. Thompson. I find it quite puzzling, while endorsed by the Black Caucus, he shows no support or brotherhood towards Mr. Thompson in a way that borders on contradiction and hypocrisy. I’m actually offended that he would think the race card would get him more votes and sympathy, (plantation, really?). He’s obviously taking advantage of people that he deems not smart enough to know better which, in essence, makes him the true racist. There’s an old saying that comes to mind-”It is better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to open one’s mouth and remove all doubt.” Ironically, this was quoted by Abraham Lincoln!

The Ford family in Memphis had the black church thing down to an art form. They’d hit them all. First would be the regular offering, then the love offering for the Ford family. There’s no telling how much money they raised in their heyday..

What are you thinking?
