Former Eupora Mayor Interested in Senate?

June 11, 2009

Last week, Henry Ross, the former mayor of Eupora, was mentioned as a potential dark horse candidate for the First District Congressional race in 2010. However, the Commercial Dispatch is reporting that Ross has announced plans to the run for the U.S. Senate (h/t Y’all Politics).

From the Commercial Dispatch:

The way Henry Ross sees it, three “pillars” have upheld this country: faith, family and freedom. But these concepts are “crumbling,” he said on Tuesday.

He spoke at length to the Lowndes County Republican Women at their monthly meeting at Holiday Inn on Highway 45 about national developments he perceives as eroding at these concepts.

Ross ended his speech by announcing his plan to run for U.S. Senate.

While I think Ross would make a strong candidate for future office, I do not see where a run for the Senate comes into play. And it seems odd that he would make this announcement when the next Senate race is not until 2012 when an incumbent Republican will be on the ticket. The next chance for a retirement will probably come in 2014 with Thad Cochran.

The other thought I had was that he either mis-spoke or the newspaper mis-reported the information and he meant state Senate. However, assuming Ross still resides in Eupora, his district is currently represented by Gary Jackson, a fellow Republican.

Like I said, Ross has a bright future…but this announcement just seems baffling to me.
