Signatures Lacking on Voter ID Petition

State GOP Chair Brad White told the Sun Herald that the party has collected and verified around 35,000 signature for the Voter ID ballot initiative the party is pushing. This means that more than 55,000 signatures are lacking. To have the question put on the 2010 ballot, the signatures have to be collected by October 7th. Should they miss that deadline, they would have until February 2010 to come up with the signatures for the 2011 ballot.

White has said he is “cautiously optimistic” they can make the October deadline, but this is just showing why the ballot initiative process in Mississippi is so difficult. Since a process was adopted about two decades ago, only two propositions have successfully made the ballot (out of more than two dozen proposed initiatives).
