To Strike or Not To Strike?

Last evening, it looked like First Student bus drivers who work in Madison County, Hinds County, Yazoo County and West Point school districts were set to go on strike over stalled contract negotiations. That was the report from WLBT last evening, but the Clarion Ledger soon followed up with the announcement that strike plans have been put on hold. It looks like it was business as usual for these bus drivers this morning.

First Student is an Ohio based company who handles the negotiations. According to the Teamsters Local 891 (the local union that represents this group of drivers) website, they voted to join the union in September 2008. While I do not know the specifics of this local election, First Student has signed a neutrality agreement with the Teamsters in many cases promising not to actively oppose the union or be involved in the organizing drive.
