A Triple Dose of Populism From Childers
Yesterday’s press release from Rep. Travis Childers may be a very good indicator of what kind of campaign he is planning on running to keep his seat in the First District. While the Republican challengers are talking healthcare, Nancy Pelosi, and red meat conservative issues, Childers knows he needs to take a different path- which he does.
Childers again criticized what he called “partisan tactics” in the Senate- directing his ire at Sen. Jim Bunning (R-KY) for blocking a spending bill that included goodies like unemployment benefits, COBRA subsidies, and Medicare reimbursements.
He then offered his strong disapproval for any talk of social security privatization. He told supporters that “Mississippians are being threatened” under this plan and vowed to never support a plan that would “gamble the financial security of millions of hard-working American in our volatile stock market.”
And lastly, he talked about how he is fighting to “hold Wall Street accountable,” as he places the blame for the economy on them.
Expect to here a lot more like this from Childers between now and November. The trick will be for the GOP challenger to set the campaign tone, pin Childers in a corner, and make him speak about things he may be a little uncomfortable with.
