About That Executive Order Banning Taxpayer Funded Abortion…
Democratic leaders were able to secure the necessary votes from so-called pro-life Democrats on the healthcare overhaul earlier this year in exchange for an executive order from the president promising to prevent taxpayer funded abortions.
The state of Mississippi did not take any chances in waiting for the most pro-abortion administration in our nation’s history to follow through, and passed an opt-out about a month or so ago. At that time, many Democrats in the state (some who called themselves pro-life) said this was just a political ploy and there was no need to pass this law because of Barack Obama’s executive order.
The question today is just what is going on which that executive order. House Minority Leader John Boehner (R-OH) noted today that we have seen no progress on the issue. This includes a progress report from Secretary of Health and Human Services Kathleen Sebelius which made not mention of what the administration is doing to implement the executive order.
In a May 13 letter to Sebelius, Boehner asked the following questions which he has yet to get a solid response on: “Has the Department provided guidance to states to implement the president’s Executive Order on abortions? When does the Administration expect to issue the directive on abortions? Will the new federal high-risk pools touted by the Administration also ensure that abortions will not be covered? Millions of Americans care deeply about this aspect of the new law and its implementation, and no progress report is complete without detailed information about it.”
The executive order may have received a lot of press when the deal was announced and they had the votes, but now that it is out of the spotlight look for the administration to drag it on as long as possible.
