NRA To Endorse Childers

June 21, 2010

Various outlets are reporting that the NRA will once again be backing Rep. Travis Childers in the First District. This comes on the heels of an email from the Alan Nunnelee campaign stating that they anticipated the NRA would back Childers, the incumbent. Obviously, they knew the endorsement was imminent. Personally, this is what I expected all along but am a little shocked they did this so early. What if Childers is losing by 10 points in September?

Here’s more from the Commercial Appeal. It looks like Childers had an announcement in Tupelo, along with one in Hernando.

Update: Here is a statement from the NRCC on the endorsement: “Alan Nunnelee and Travis Childers will vote the exact same way on Second Amendment issues. The difference? Nunnelee will also vote to put a pro-gun speaker in charge of the House; Childers, on the other hand, put party loyalty ahead of gun rights by casting his speaker’s vote for a San Francisco liberal hostile to North Mississippi values.”

The presser from the NRA is below:

The National Rifle Association Political Victory Fund (NRA-PVF) is endorsing U.S. Representative Travis Childers (D-1) for re-election in Mississippi’s general election on November 2nd.

“The National Rifle Association is committed to preserving freedom for all law-abiding Americans. We support Congressman Childers because he has stood with gun owners, hunters and sportsmen in this country,” said Chris W. Cox, chairman of NRA–PVF.

During his tenure in Congress, Rep. Childers has demonstrated a solid commitment to the Second Amendment, both in Mississippi and across the country. Most recently, he led the effort to restore Second Amendment rights to residents of our nation’s capital by cosponsoring the D.C. Second Amendment Enforcement Act. In 2009, Rep. Childers signed the pro-gun congressional amicus brief supporting the Second Amendment’s application to state and local governments in the McDonald case now before the Supreme Court. Finally, he cosponsored legislation to reform the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

Congressman Travis Childers’ unwavering support for individual gun ownership rights has earned him an “A+” rating and endorsement by NRA-PVF.

“Mississippi’s hunters and gun owners value their right to own firearms, and Travis Childers is the best candidate to help them preserve that freedom,” concluded Cox. “We urge all NRA members and gun owners to cast their vote for Rep. Travis Childers on November 2nd.”

Big deal the NRA endorses Childers. What we really want to know about is the influence of labor unions. Toyota in Blue Springs opens a can of worms. Put Childers in the position of being pro 2000 plus jobs in his district or contending with the unions that bank rolled him.

What does this mean, “us?” Does he have a mouse in his pocket.
Childers said of Nunnelee. “But we believe Mississippians will reward us for being an independent voice in Congress. We’ve done what we said we’d do. And north Mississippians expect you to keep your word. We’ve done that.”

Is Childers speaking of himself as a royal we and us? Most people refer to themselves as me and I. Maybe it is Pelosi and Franks he has in that pocket mentioned above.

Maybe he has a split personality. I wonder if the imaginary friend is the liberal and the real Travis a conservative or vice versa.

is anyone pissed about the NRAs support of the disclose act?

I think the NRA is finding a lot of enemies on the right and it will only increase as they most likely support more Dems in competitive districts. I have a feeling they may have gotten a little too big where your constituencies just become too large.

The Dems are trying to hijack the NRA.
