On Tuesday, Second District Republican hopeful received the backing of the nation’s largest pro-life organization, the National Right to Life. They endorsed Marcy’s uphill campaign because of his “commitment to renewing a culture of life, not only in Mississippi, but throughout the nation and in the U.S. Congress.”

They also chided his opponent, Rep. Bennie Thompson, for his support for the healthcare legislation- which has been a sticking point for NRLC this year- and his opposition to the Stupak amendment last year.

Just to clarify what I meant by that is NRLC and other pro-life groups have vowed to oppose so-called pro-life Democrats they have supported in the past if they voted for the healthcare reform legislation. Obviously, Thompson doesn’t fall into that category.

Other NLRC endorsements. Earlier this year, NLRC endorsed Travis Childers in MS-01. I may have missed it but have not seen other endorsements from the group in MS-03 or MS-04. In the Third, they would undoubtedly back Rep. Gregg Harper, and in the Fourth I imagine they would stick with the incumbent (much like in the First), supporting Rep. Gene Taylor.

Democrats’ Jefferson-Jackson-Hammer dinner set for September. The Mississippi Democrats sent out a press release yesterday announcing that their annual Jefferson-Jackson-Hammer has been set for September 10 at the Old Capital Inn in Jackson. Clyde Williams, who is the political director of the DNC, will be the keynote speaker and talk about the midterms and what he sees happening over the next two years. His family has roots in the Magnolia State.

According to the presser, the party will honor the state’s three Democratic Congressmen- Travis Childers, Bennie Thompson and Gene Taylor.

Politico write-up on early MS-01 campaigning. Politico has a story on the direction of the First District race between Travis Childers and Alan Nunnelee, and it starts with this line: “Mississippi Rep. Travis Childers is running for reelection as a Democrat, but you might not know it at first glance.”
