We have a couple nuggets on the GOP primary for state treasurer, which is shaping up to be just as eventful as the one for governor and lieutenant governor.

** State Sen. Lee Yancey will make it formal on Friday when he announces his candidacy for state treasurer. The Rankin county Republican will make a series of stops in the following cities: Brandon, Olive Branch, Laurel, Meridian, Pascagoula and Ripley.

** What makes Yancey’s announcement interesting is that the current treasurer, Tate Reeves, hasn’t revealed his plans for 2011. We all basically know what he is doing- running for lieutenant governor- but I haven’t seen any formal statement that we have seen from other candidates. I have heard Reeves will make an announcement “at the end of the month.”

** One of Yancey’s likely opponents will be Lucien Smith, former counsel to Haley Barbour who brought in a very impressive fundraising haul last month alone. But don’t look for Smith to jump in the race right now. Smith and Reeves are pretty close and I am told that he will wait for Reeves’ announcement before he formally enters; February looks likely.
