Poll Puts Hood Up 49-32 Over Simpson

April 11, 2011

Public Policy Polling, who has given us a ton of numbers from the Magnolia State, has some more information worth mentioning. Attorney General Jim Hood is currently up 49-32 on Steve Simpson. According to the poll, Hood is doing very well within his party (up 74-12) while also doing reasonably well among Republicans (getting 27 percent). He leads independents by a 43-34 margin. Also, Simpson is getting just 44 percent of the white vote.

All of these crosstabs underscore how Hood has won in the past and why he is a favorite for this fall. It’s obviously early, but a Republican can’t be at 51 percent within the party or 44 percent among whites and win.

PPP said this about the race: “Still, given the recent political winds in Mississippi it seems unlikely this race will do anything but tighten and we’ll see if Hood can hold on or not.” We will obviously see. From the likes of it, this particular firm won’t be polling Mississippi any more.

If I were Hood, this would actually worry me a bit. No one knows who Steve Simpson is yet and Hood isn’t polling above 50%.
