As MEA Hands Out Endorsements…

July 5, 2011

As the Mississippi Educators Association begins to hand out endorsements to 2011 candidates for local and statewide office in Mississippi, their national affiliate- the National Educators Association- became the first national union to formally endorse Barack Obama’s re-election bid. At the same convention, delegates voted to increase member dues to the tune of $32 million to add to their political warchest.

If you’re an teacher who lives in Mississippi and you’re still a member after the national come out for Obama, then you don’t need to be a teacher. Know where your money goes. Know what your groups are about.

The NEA/MEA does not speak for all educators in Mississippi by any means. I know this is especaily true for professionals at the community college level. Most of us believe in practical and accountable education, real-world skills that will prepare students for to get JOBS and to be responsible CITIZENS.

The NEA is often an embarassment to those principles.
