Friday Ramblings with Robert
Mississippi is still the fattest state in the country. It is not a badge of honor by any means, but it is a fact of life based on the nature of our state. We are a poor, rural state and that is not going to change overnight and neither will these obesity numbers. The good news this year is that the obesity rate in the state actually fell 1 percentage point, which is progress. Perhaps we can improve more and possibly even pull ourselves out of last place, but the fact remains that we will always be near the bottom of these numbers and that is just the way it is.
Perry 1, Obama 0
Rick Perry, Republican Governor of Texas, has not even announced his intentions of running for President or not, but he has already squared off with Barack Obama. Last night the State of Texas put Humberto Leal, a Mexican national who has been in this country since he was a toddler, to death for the brutal murder and rape of a 16 year old girl. Barack Obama, worried about the U.N. backed Vienna Treaty, urged the Supreme Court and Rick Perry to stop the execution of Leal so that Congress could have time to consider legislation to enforce the treaty. Congress has had years to pass legislation to enforce the treaty, but never has and likely would not do so in the next 6 months. Rick Perry made the right decision here to allow for justice to be carried out last night. He stood tall and did not give in to the pressure being applied by the President. I personally do not care whether some foreign countries are going to be upset because this man was executed. He broke the law, he was convicted and sentenced, and now his sentence has been carried out.
