Bubba Carpenter: I Have Tried To Run A Positive Campaign

October 28, 2011

Here is a recent mailer from Rep. Bubba Carpenter, the Republican running for re-election in his Northeast Mississippi House seat. You may remember his opponent, Thomas McCarley, whose ‘Honor Your Promise’ email was sent around the Tishomingo county school system, but he failed to edit the basic “Senator/ Representative” choice in the template from the Democratic group. I’ve heard other Democratic groups like “KIDS PAC” have also been involved in trying to defeat Carpenter.

This led to the following mailer from the incumbent:

House District 1 is in the very Northeast corner of the state, borders both Alabama and Tennessee, and runs west into Alcorn county and south to Belmont. Carpenter defeated incumbent Democrat Rickey Cummings four years ago. As of the October 10 CFR, Carpenter had raised over $21,000 with about $17,000 cash on hand; not a huge total for an incumbent Republican but better than his opponent. McCarley has raised around $14,000 and has $10,000 in the bank.

After reading this, I pulled up Thomas McCarley’s campaign finance report to see who was funding his campaign. He actually should have reported only $160 cash on hand. In-kind contributions from VPAC and trial lawyers do not count as cash on hand. I guess we will see how much the MS Kids PAC in-kind contribution he will list in a few days. He is completely letting other people run this campaign for him. How could he possibly Represent the People, when he can’t run and manage his own campaign? I guess he should have gotten them to fill out his campaign finance report for him as well. People in North Mississippi do not appreciate the stuff we are receiving from MS Kids PAC and their attempt to try and deceive us with false information.

I agree that this is pure nonsense from the dems but there are still pockets in this area of the mid south where the dems scare tactics(like PERS) work. Senate Minority Leader Roger Bedford(D)in Alabama was pretty much the only white dem incumbent that survived last yrs GOP landslide in Alabama and he’s right next door to Iuka in Russellville, Al. Also while the GOP has swept all legislative offices in Tn in recent years that border the line with northeast Ms. The dems still manage to win a few county offices in Hardin and McNairy counties. So Rep. Carpenter does have some concern to be worried…

Good points Dan. But the fact that Bubba actually unseated a sitting Democrat last time tells me something about his political ability. Don’t know McCarley, but if he is to win it’s because he is very well known and very well liked. Districts don’t usually switch from historically Democrat to Republican and then back to Democrat. Just generally doesn’t work that way.

Also helping Bubba will be Phil Bryant at the top of the ticket. I don’t know if DuPree has even been to this part of the state to campaign. He will probably do worse than Eaves did here if I had to guess.
