Can McGlowan Recover?

February 9, 2010

Earlier today, this video (first posted at Y’all Politics) began to spread of Angela McGlowan’s comments on the Gallo show this past August. When questioned about a bill that would require gun registration, McGlowan said on several occasions that she favored this. At the same time, McGlowan called herself “pro-gun” in her campaign kickoff press release.

The Second Amendment is a serious issue in MS-01. A candidate can not appear to be flimsy on the issue at all. For voters to find a candidate acceptable, there is a checklist and you need to be right on this issue to stand a chance.

So what can McGlowan do? I imagine her first hope was that this wouldn’t come up and she can continue talking about her general support of guns as she has done at Tea Parties, in press releases, etc. Thanks to YouTube, that isn’t possible. I imagine McGlowan is going to have to confront this. I am not sure how that is going to work because she is left with either continuing to hold the unpopular position or be a flip-flopper. Neither are positions any candidate would want to be associated with.

If I was in McGlowan’s shoes, I would say I was not well versed on the bill at that time, I have since looked over it, and here is how I really feel. I would then proceed to back off the old comments and talk about how I don’t really support registration. But still, this wouldn’t be a pretty road.

As for the primary, I don’t expect Alan Nunnelee to press the issue. He has said he was going to honor Reagan’s Eleventh Amendment (to not talk ill of fellow Republicans) and he has no reason to go on the attack right now. Rather, McGlowan’s opponents will step back and let her face the issue. I can’t imagine this is how she planned on spending the first week of her campaign.

I also want to reiterate how this video shows the importance and significance of social media on political campaigns these days. In the pre-YouTube days, the recording was not made into a video and posted online. In the pre-blogging days, the video was not posted and spread for the whole world to see. Social media cuts both ways- positive and negative. Unfortunately for McGlowan, she is experiencing the later.

I know what she can do, GO BACK TO WASHINGTON! She has come from the north down to the south so that she can show us how government should be done. Its De ja vue all over agian! If I remember correctly this happened about a hundred and fifty years ago as well.
The words carpet and bagger come to mind. I repeat GO BACK TO WASHINGTON!

She really jumped into that pile with both feet. Angela didn’t seem get it that criminals are called criminals because they break the law, example — not registering their guns, failing filing a tax return, and committing felonies. So only law abiding gun owners would be at risk to have big brother knock on the front door with a warrant for firearm removal, supposedly this would be for society’s protection.

The part that bothers me the most is that she seemed incapable of understanding the next logical step in the progression of gun registration. I felt like I was watching a car crash. I remember telling my husband that I was against Semi Automatic weapons. He then explained to me what those weapons were and I recanted big time. I also decided then and there to not make declarations on subjects I was unfamiliar with. McGlowan was so ugly with the callers on that show, is that what we are to expect if she is elected. Her tone bugged the snot out of me. I keep hearing this list of conservative people she is aquianted with like it validates her. I met Adam Sandler at an airport am I a stand up comic? I met Madelyn Albright on the street in Paris am I Secretary of State?

Well so much for the “McGlowan” factor. Even Mississippi Democrats know better than to say something like that. Some feared she would split the Tea Paty vote, but if this make the rounds (and it will) Ross will certainly benefit. I don’t see how she can get out of this one.

This will absolutely finish her candidacy. There is no way that she can explain this away, or qualify her remarks. Nunnelee will not have to say one word about her. All he will have to do is replay her own words, and they will destroy her. She should save herself the embarrassment and withdraw now. The terrible irony is that if she somehow were to get the Republican nomination, on gun issues, Childers would be the more conservative one in the race. Oh, how I wish others would enter the race. I don’t think any of the three announced candidates can win. The Republicans made the mistake of underestimating Childers before. It looks like that mistake is being repeated.

Hey, you would be great. You are a true conservative and you understand how it all works.

Another factor to keep in mind, and I am not going to say the state democratic party is smart/organized enough to pull this off. But, it would really work to Childers’ advantage to see McGlowan win the primary, especially in light of these comments. Since there is no primary challenge for Childers’ and not many other races on the ballots there may be a strong turnout of democrats voting in the republican primary.

If enough democrats turn out they may be able to help McGlowan get the Republican nomination which will all but ensure that Childers’ reelection.

I am afraid you are right on the money Random Thoughts. I will be the first to say I will not vote for McGlowan if she is the ticket. Childers will get my vote before she does. At least he knows he is a Dem.

Reading comments here and at Yall Politics McGlowan should run back to D.C. I have decided to do the same thing and vote for Childers if McGlowan is the nominee.

Let’s remember Angela attended a public school in Oxford, MS from her elementary years through her graduation of that same institution. She then went on to graduate from the University of Mississippi. She would not be labeled a carpet bagger.

Yes, the comment on the Gallo show showed that she was not well versed in the piece of legislation that was proposed for a government registration of firearms. Paul Gallo would have her on the show once again that explained her comments further, but do I believe this should be handled in a way that she gives an explanation of this more fully, of course! Remember, this was August of 2009, not February of 2010. We all have changed our minds on things as common citizens when we understood the facts more closely.

Don’t make your decision on a candidate because of comments on the web (even as this is being posted). Do your homework and ask the pertinent questions!

I did my homework. It would take a great deal to change my thoughts. Please explain the tone of the interview and her response to callers, that bothered me more than her stance. Also when someone explains the domino effect of gun control and you keep going with it I am concerned. Ms. McGlowan kept saying the government needs to know! Why? I live a law abiding life and the guns in my home are securely put away. Does she not understand the right to privacy? I am no gun lover but I respect the Second Amendment.

Thanks for that. My guns are very pertinent to me. The piece of legislation in question was not what bothered me. What bothered me was the fact that she said, with her own mouth, over and over “I think guns should be listed.” That statement is not about the legislation at all that is McGlowan sharing her opinion. Her HONEST opinion. She even tried to get the host to agree with her. He would have no part of it!
Sure we change our minds on what we want for lunch or what kind of car we want to drive. I can honestly say that I have never changed my mind on whether or not I should have to tell the feds how many, if any, guns I have in my house. I have never had a run in with the law so therefore it is my right to keep and bear arms and that shall not be infringed. Listing my guns is infringing.
I am not making my decision because of comments on the web. I am making my decision because of comments that came straight from McGlowans own mouth.
As for her clarifing her statement or changing her mind. Please! The only thing that is different from when she said those things till now is that she is running for the Dist 1 seat.

I think that everyone in the world who may be interested has heard the Gallo audio. Do you think that a candidate can change their mind after looking more closely at an issue? I guess everyone makes mistakes – are candidates not allowed to do this? Her speech in Tupelo today was very emphatic that she is against gun control and that what she said on Gallo was not how she feels about guns today

    Dangit,
I was on the web looking for Angela’s website to volunteer to help her. Hearing this ruined me. I just can not support someone who thinks the government has a right to know what I have in my home.

Looking more closely at an issue! List guns or not. If she can not understand that how in the world is she going to be able to understand some of the bills that she will be voting on in the house.
If you listen carefully from about the 2:05 minute mark to about the 2:15 minute mark of the audio I would swear she was a liberal. Let government solve all of your problems. As far as mind changing 3:30 to 3:37 pretty much sums it up. That is her opinion. She even makes an apology for feeling that way. Come on guns are not a flip flop issue and you all know it. That is a core belief for or agianst.
    1. I am keeping score though. So for the record she was a liberal, then she became a conservative.
    2. She was for listing our guns now she is agianst that too.
I am wondering is her philosophy going to keep evolving over the course of her campaign according to the publics reaction to her speeches. I belive that is called a populist not a conservative. We already have one of those running his name is Travis.

I think in society where the government takes more and more from the people this one will not be overcome. I guess like those people in Pennsylvania I cling to my religion and the Second Amendment. I think that this is a bit like a cheating husband that cannot really be trusted. I am glad that others can over look Ms. McGlowans tracking it around on the carpet but in this political climate it is a no go. There is a new standard in politics and we are all elephants, we don’t forget.

Maybe we could get a few people off Medicaid and Welfare and we would not have to increase taxes. As far as the cigarette tax do it again. As far as Childers you are right he dancing in street. I would rather he stay in Washington than McGlowan be representative.

What about Nunnelee and Ross. Neither one of them could win against Childers? They seem to be fine people, very knowlegeable. I read some negatives on Ross on here as well as Nunnelee but nothing that would keep me from voting for them.

I have no problem with Nunnelee or Ross. I think they know what it is to live in this district and the values of this district McGlowan does not. Gun issue case in point. I will vote for either of these men. I’ll vote in November for one of them if I get that chance. I do think Nunnelee could beat Childers. Just look at the last week on here. Nunnelee has been sitting pretty. We all know the case Jason made against Ross come on with the Nunnelee stuff. Raising taxes seems to be the only thing I hear. We all remember George H. W. Bush and his read my lips statement. All I know is we live in huge welfare state and somebody has to pay something.

Ross and Nunnelee are both fine men and good candidates. The positives on both candidates far out weigh the negatives. Republicans in MS01 would be well served by either man. I have heard that Nunnelee is not a good speaker and a bit boring, I don’t care, that is not why we sent a rep to DC. Ross I have heard doesn’t have a big support base, that canchange. I like that Nunnelee is not a lawyer, then I like the fact that Ross is considered a constitutional lawyer. Hopefully, either man would be brave enough to vote against pork for Miss at the cost of raising the debt. Our rep. needs to remember that states rights are the rights not listed in the constitution and not infringe upon them. A nanny state we do not need. Big brother doesn’t need to know about legal possessions in our homes.

I agree with you. We need to get behind them and work hard to get one of them through the primary. I am for the Constitution. It is what our country was built on. Have not seen any comments from Nunnelee on this but I heard Ross on Facebook and see what you mean by that.

I think we are all beginning to agree that realistically the race is between Ross and Nunnelee with Nunnelee at an advantage. We also would agree that there is definitely space for a candidate to gain traction against Nunnelee’s short term advantage.

I think Chris is right aand he is still going back and forth to Jackson. I am sure Brett will let you know as soon as he hears something about a speaking engagment. So keep checking back.
