Poll: Bryant, Dennis, Holliday Would Win

March 31, 2011

Public Policy Polling, who recently polled Barack Obama, Haley Barbour, and the 2012 presidential vote in Mississippi, also polled opinions on the gubernatorial race. The key word right now seems to be undecided when it comes to opinions, but it also shows that whoever wins the Republican primary will win in November.

Phil Bryant has the greatest name ID with just 41 percent who don’t have an opinion of the lieutenant governor. Bryant’s favorability split is 32-27. Dave Dennis’ is 13-22, Hudson Holliday’s is 7-24, Johnny DuPree’s is 12-28, and Bill Luckett’s is 13-22.

Matched head-to-head, Bryant leads DuPree 56-25 and Luckett 53-27. Dennis leads DuPree 41-28 and Luckett 43-25. And Holliday, with the lowest profile, would also win. He leads DuPree 37-28 and Luckett 38-28.

A couple things: there are still a number of undecided black voters which would obviously provide a boost to the Democratic nominee; and we also see Bryant getting 22 percent of the black vote against DuPree and 19 percent against Luckett. We’d think that either of those numbers would go down by November. That said, when you add in the undecided white voters and there tendency to lean Republican, the Republican is still in very good position.

Another thing, there are still a ton of undecideds. Even Bryant, with multiple statewide campaigns behind him and the earned media that comes with his position, doesn’t crack 60 percent on the name ID charts. Everyone else is in the 30 percent range among name ID. What does this mean? People aren’t seriously paying attention right now.

Note: As we said earlier this week, PPP is a Democratic firm but they have a very good track record.

It’s remarkable Gen. Hudson has such recognition in light of the facts the mainstream press, Clarion-Ledger, Tupelo Journal, Biloxi Sun-Herald, the Associated Press and most political columnists either fail to mention him or refer to him as a Pearl River supervisor when crediting Bryant with being Lt. Gov. and Dennis as a ‘businessman’.

As soon as Holliday’s TV show begins airing on cable at Gulfport/Biloxi, Hattiesburg/Laurel, Jackson, Meridian, Tupelo and Memphis and viewers learn he’s not only an elected official where he ‘rubber meets the road’ but a retired Major General in the Mississippi National Guard, a longtime successful business entrepreneur with a wide range of experience including being a longtime member of Hancock Bank advisory committee, these ‘recognition’ figures may change.

The TV show, “Our Mississippi with Gen. Hudson Holliday’ will begin as a half -hour show airing at least three times weekly and grow to a full hour airing several times each week.

There is only one candidate who is not the same as the others. You know, the ones who have all taken Govt. paychecks.

Why don’t we elect someone like Ron Williams, who has never taken a Govt. Paycheck and knows that money doesn’t grow on taxpayers.

You know, It’s easy for these guys who use the connections and authority they get as government employees to parlay that into ” Business”. But let’s face it, a true businessman starts from scratch with a good Idea and then builds on it without political favoritism or cronyism. That is is the true builder of our economy. Any thing else is just usurping by way of authority.
